93 a4 to m6 conversion (is it different than 94 and up)
93 a4 to m6 conversion (is it different than 94 and up)
I would like to Convert My 4l60 to a T56 within the next year or so. The only problem is that my car is a 1993 Formula. Will I have to buy a "swap kit" (aka the m6 and accessories) from another 93 or will a 94 and up t56 etc be the same.
i'm thinking that the 94 and up will be more complicated, but I want a m6 and since my car only has 25k miles id like t keep the car. Most people would suggest that I sell my car, but nobody will buy a 93 a4 (I already Tried lol).

The 93 T56 does not have the "skip shift" feature, nor can the 93 ECM control skip shift. No big deal - you would defeat it anyway if you had a 94+. Just less wiring to worry about.
And there were two different T56's used in 93. Both have lower torque ratings than the 94+ T56. Both have much steeper 1st gear ratios than the 94+ version. Check the info:
http://www.ws6.com/faq/4_3.htm#ch4_3a
The 94+ version is stronger, and all have the 2.66 1st gear.
There are no physical differences other than those. Based on that, I would pick a 94 - 97 T56. Some people claim the 93 T56 is actually a Viper tranny, used because the GM version of the T56 was not ready yet, but I have seen a Viper T56, and its quite a bit different than the GM T56. I've seen no proof that the 93 actually got a Viper tranny. And of course there would be no reason for GM to rate the Viper tranny as weaker than the later GM version.

thanks for the info, Im glad I can get a 94+. What should I do about ecm/pcms? Will i need a M6 harness/ecm for my car or can the one from the a4 be reprogrammed for a m6?
thanks again injuneer, you are a fbody genius

You need, as a minimum, to set the ECM up as an M6. The M6 VSS produces 17 pulse per output shaft revolution, the A4 produces 40. The 93 also has some other quirks with the VSS/speedo and calibrating it for the rear axle ratio, and I'm just not familiar with the details of the 93 system. Your 93 ECM will output a signal for the T56's reverse gear lockout (prevents shifting into reverse when the vehicle is moving). You will need to wire the clutch switch (prevents starting the engine unless the clutch pedal is on the floor). And the cruise control also has a release switch on the clutch pedal, to drop out the cruise when you use the clutch. Also need to address the backup light switch. The T56 has it on the passenger side of the tranny. The A4, I believe has it on the shifter.
There are several threads on wiring the M6 in place of the A4.... try a "search". Just verify that any procedure is applicable to the 93.
