i have a friend with a 3200 pound mustang and over 700hp to the wheels making better 60's than 90% of the 4th gens and he runs an 8.8 (with a spool). An 8.8 'should' be stronger than a 12 bolt, since the ring gear is a fraction larger than the 12 bolt and just 0.2" smaller than a 9", not to mention the weight savings over the 9" and 12 bolt!

I've been thinking of doing this swap now for a few months, and I'm getting a stock 8.8 complete , trading some parts this guy needs.... So I'll just be buying the upgrade parts to replace the stock components ( gears, posi, axles, cover etc...) I hope this can turnout well, and take some abuse ( 6 speed off a 2 step pretty hard.) Bump this to the top, I'd like to see some more info on this setup before I dive in head first not knowing what I got myself into

AFAIK, the 8.8 only has one pinion support. The 9" has 2 making it a much better choice IMO.

If your going to put another rear-end in your car, there are only 2 logical choices. A Chevy 12-bolt or Ford 9-inch. That 8.8 isn't worth the time or money to mess with IMO. There are more parts available and way more support for these more popular rear ends. I installed the Moser 12-bolt and this is one heavy duty rear end my friend.

I am in the process of building an 8.8" and think it's a great idea for us budget minded folks that have some ingenuity. I have a spare 7.5" and I was given an 8.8" so for $600 I will have Moser axles, 3.70 gears, new bearings and a minispool ready to go. I have seen 7sec. Mustangs with the 8.8" still in there. As far as I know there aren't any stock suspension F-bodys inthe 7's so I should be ok. Later Clint

Well I don't like the idea of spending 2000+ on fabricated rear end. I could always get a 8.5" 10/12 bolt and build from that, but i'm getting the 8.8" at no cost just trading parts so i'm using that method. it will take alot more abuse then the 10 bolt. I"m on a budget b/c I'm also just starting building a motor. So if it don't last then oh well.. I'll have to dish the cash out at a later time.

Re: 8.8 Ford Rearend in 4th Gen F-bodies?
As a fabricator and welder , I would say the 8.8 ford is a little better than the 12 bolts that fit the f-body's. Moser is having some issues with the front bolt breaking out that holds the torque arm. [unpaid advertising deleted] has some 8.8 rear ends on their site. Professional quality and not a bad price.
