The 14 bolt in my 91 454SS has taken a lot of abuse and still survives.

As for using a 8.5: for a swap, you need to understand that the only diff that will swap into a third or fourth gen is from another third or fourth gen or an aftermarket 12 bolt/9" designed for the swap. The biggest problem is the use of the torque arm. Every other junkyard diff you'll find won't have a mount for the torque arm plus you really need to check the width of the diff. I'm not sure about the b-body diffs but truck diffs are very wide. To use any under an f-body will probably need to be shortened. By the time you're done converting a junkyard diff to work in an f-body, it can be cheaper to just buy an aftermarket bolt-in diff.
