700R4, Lock-up or non locking.

My 700R4 went out in my 93 ta.. I am getting another tranny from a friend of mine in great shape with the billet servo and a tci shift kit. anyways he has a b&m holeshot 3000 non lockup stall in it, I thought I read somewhere that a non-lockup stall is a bad idea for a 700R4/4L60. is this true? I know mpg's will suffer alittle. but I do alot of highway driving. will I gain anything performance wise with the non-lockup over the lockup? I have the 306 cam so it likes to come on around 3500rpms anyways...thanks for the help>

Re: 700R4, Lock-up or non locking.

The reason many switch to non lock-up in a 700 (4L60) is because the lock-up clutches in high stall (small diameter) converters aren't very well known for holding up.

You will notice a decrease in fuel milage.

The transmission also HAS to be modified to use a non lock-up converter. You simply can't just throw a non lock-up in a lock-up transmission. Some things in the pump need to be modified to provide proper cooler flow. Without these mods, the trans and converter will overheat.
