700R4 conversion problems!!
700R4 conversion problems!!
when i bought the car it came with a 700R4 in it, well within 2 months of owning the car i toasted the trans, no biggie gave me an excuse to build the poo out of it, well i had it re done 9 clutch packs per gear, hardened everything, manual valve body ect... basicaly the works, you realy cant build it any stronger, well i came down the highway and lost 3rd and OD last night, took it to the shop this morning and they said i fried the clutchpacks (no kidding right) well they said that the cable going from the trans to the TB has too much slack in it and that they need to make a custom bracket to make this 700R4 work properly, they said something about 28lb or something of pressure on the cable at all times then up from there as you hit the throttle. i currently have a AS&M 54mm TB on the car, do they make a bracket to fit on the TB so that the propper pressure will be on that cable?

What manual VB are you using? Most good manual valve bodies don't use a TV cable.
I'd guess the shop is just making excuses about why their transmission took a dump. Of course if their still using the Alto 9 clutch 3-4 set up, then it's obvious they don't know what their doing. If they did know what they were doing, they'd also know that a '93 F-Body uses a 700R4. You need the bracket, cable, and throttle body off of a '93 car.

Re: 700R4 conversion problems!!
what are the differances between the 2? i looked up info on my AS&M throttle body and it says its for 93-97 LT1's so would it be just the bracket that i need. also if they shouldnt be using that many clutchpacks what should they be using?
Re: 700R4 conversion problems!!
Most throttle body manufacturers seperate the '93 from the rest, because they're the only one's that need a pivot for the TV linkage. I know Holley and Edelbrock/BBK list them seperate. If yours already has a TV pivot, then you're good to go. You'll need a TV bracket and TV cable from a '93 Camaro/Firebird. DON'T try to make anything else fit/work. Buy the right stuff.
The (9) clutch 3-4 is antiquated. The Raybestos "Z-Pack" is the best thing available for the 3-4's. To jam 9 clutches in the 3-4's, you've got to use steels that are too thin. We all know what happens when you heat a piece of thin metal up, right?...It warps! The steels warp and take all the clearance out of the clutch pack, which leads to premature failure. I thought most builders knew this.
