This is on an '87 305 w/ a 700 transmission & it was driving fine, never an indication of problems. I stopped for an errand, shut it off, and came out in few, but from park or neutral the transmisison only started in reverse. I replaced the neutral safety switch but no change either. The drop in into reverse happens right away and doesn't have a loud clunk (functions like it would seem normal if I were puting it into reverse). Someone said this could be a stuck valve inside the transmission. The fluid is at the right level but looks old. Any thoughts on getting this driving again just until I can get to a transmission shop? Thanks

 

Its the neutral safety switch. You may need to adjust the tranny linkage or the switch to make it line up but that is the only thing that controls the starting.

 

okay, way late response to your post but the transmission just stuck in reverse. every time the transmission gently drops into reverse and then stays in reverse. so, think the neutral safety switch is fine becuase it only starts in park & neutral. any tips out there on adjusting linkage on a '87 700R?

 

problem fixed - the shift cable was broken at the point where it attaches to transmission. $25 buck repair
