6L80E tranny conversion

Hey guys I am looking into getting a 6l80E for my LT1 car that I have. Has anyone seen the price on these New GM tranny's. I have researched them a little and They seem to take a bit of abuse and 6 gears is always better than 4.

Re: 6L80E tranny conversion

you have got to be kidding man? how many more extra pounds is that thing?

Get a 4l60 built right and it will last. A buddy of mine has made over 100 passes on a 150shot and over 20 passes with a 250 on his ls1.

That's pretty interesting. If this trans would even be possible in our cars, I'll be pissed that I just spent $2k on a built 4L60E. Combine this 6-speed with the new paddle-shifting kit, and I would be a happy camper.

One question, though, how would the computer control the trans, and how would you calibrate the speed?

Also, does anyone know the weight of the 4L60E?

Re: 6L80E tranny conversion

You Have To Use A Ls-2 Or Ls7 Cpu On The Lsx Eng's And A Ls2 A6 Or Custom Wiring Harness

On A Lt1,tbi,tpi,ex.... You Need To Use A M6 Cpu And A Stand Alone Cpu For The Transmission

On A Carburetor You Need The Stand-alone Cpu For The Transmission

4l60e = 162 Wet

You Need To Move The Torque Arm To The Transmission Crossmember
You Will Need The Shifter, Shifter Cable, Dipstick, Torque Converter
(on A Pre Lsx Eng You Will Need A Custom Converter)

I'll have to keep this in mind if/when my new motor blows this trans. I'm sure a couple people will do it by then. That would be a great project.

As a Benz tech I drive vehicles every day with a 7 speed auto and I can tell you it is quite amazing how the engine stays in the power band. Also, it is the same size as their old 5 speed auto.

Right...but I seem to recall something different in the torque converter area.

I would think an A4 ECM could be re-flashed to work since the stand alone unit will control the tranny, but I guess that subject goes in the Computer Diagnostics & Programming section.

THE 6L80E WILL BE THE SAME SIZE AS A 4L60E.
.
Something doesn't sound right.
Isn't there a code?
4 = 4 foward gears
L = longtudical mount as opposed to transverse ex. {4T60E)
60 = rated torque capacity code
E = electronic controled

If that 6L80E is the correct designation for the unit, I don't see how it's going to be the same size or weight the same as a 4L60E.
The 4L80E is a larger and much heavier unit than the 4L60E.
What am I missing?

Re: 6L80E tranny conversion

To make the 6L80E work you would need to have the LT1(or other engine) pcm/ecm reprogrammed so the auto trans codes wouldn't be thrown, maybe use an aftermarket lock-up kit, use a 6L80E shifter, use a aftermarket module to run the 6L80E if such a thing exists, doubt a LS7 cpu would work. Weight...how much more does it weigh? The biggest problem i see is would it physically work or would it be too large.
