5.7 tpi auto to manual

I have a 91 z28 5.7. i want to convert it into a t5 5speed or t56 6speed, what would be the best trany to put into my car?/which ever is easiest or less expensive.

also if anyone knows what i need to covert my car into a manual can someone gaive me a list of things to buy?
I want to get every part i need then take the car to the shop where i go and have them do the labor.

I think you want to stay away from the T5, there was a reason they didn't put them behind the 5.7L from the factory. Find a good T56 for the swap, it may cost a little more now but you will be much happier down the road. I’m not sure what parts you need to swap a T-56 into a 3rd gen but the main items to look of are the transmissioin cross member, clutch hydraulics (master and slave) clutch pedals, lower shift boot and upper center console. I'm not 100% sure about the shifter positioning of the T56 compared to the T5 but I believe they are in the same location. You might want check out thirdgen.org as I'm sure many of those guys have done this swap and can tell you exactly what you need and what it will take to get the VSS and reverse lights working correctly.

The shifter on the T56 is about 1 inch further back than the T5. That doesnt really matter however because you will have to measure for your shifter hole based on the transmission you have.

You will need:

Transmission with bellhousing and shifter.
Clutch assembly with apropriate flywheel
Hydraulics
Pedals, i reused my 3rd gen pedals
Lower shifter boot
and obviously you will need a new center console
Transmission crossmember

The driveshaft is the same length for whatever you choose.

What you get all depends on which transmission you choose.

If i were you i would go for a t56. A t5 would be on borrowed time behind your motor.

The most difficult part will be mounting your hydraulics and cutting your shifter hole. Everything else is a breeze. Good luck

Someone made a "kit" to install the T56 from an LT1 in a 3rd Gen. Steve Spohn (Spohn Performance) helped design the kit (I know because he borrowed my spare T56 to do the design). He doesn't make the kit, but if you contact him on his "tech" line, he should be able to point you in the right direction.

More often than not, parts from junkyards will do just fine. I've never used a tranny from a junk yard, but the other pieces no doubt is where I would look.

If you use a salvage yard tranny be sure you KNOW the mileage before paying any decent amount of money for a used trans. If they don't know the mileage or say I think about XXX amount of miles I wouldn't pay much for it as you may be rebuilding it soon. I would suggest getting all new hydraulics (master and slave) as it will save time and potential problems in the future. Any of the other parts for the swap should be fine from a salvage yard.
