4L60E stuck in 3rd Gear

I've done some looking, but haven't found this particular problem.

I just completed rebuilding my engine after about 6 months of dicking around and being at school. I remember before I took the engine/trans out I was getting an error for I believe some solenoid controlling third gear? I know it was something to do with a solenoid in the trans.

Before I got this code the trans would work fine until it got hot. Then, it would stay in 3rd gear not matter what I did, even if I shifted manually. The problem began happening more and more quickly after I started the car until it was immediate.

What do I need to fix? I assume it would be easier with trans out of the car.

Thanks,
Troop

3rd gear is "limp mode" in a 4L60E. This means that both shift solenoids are off.

Are you getting any SES lights? If you've got a transmission code, it will throw it into limp. Have it scanned and post what you find. This is more than likely an electrical problem.

I did have an SES light, but I don't recall what it was. I believe it was something to do with a 3rd gear shift solenoid. I just wanted to see if it was something that I needed to replace which would be much easier when the transmission is out of the car.

I guess it's too late now, since I don't know the code and the trans is on the floor in the garage. Thanks for the reply.

I would certainly replace both shift solenoids, And the PCS the code was probably PO757

Thanks for the input. Would the dealer be the only place to get these solenoids? How much do you think they'd run?

Sorry for the series of questions, but now after all this has happened I'm really on a budget.

Thanks,
Troop

A dealer would not be the only place but they are not exspensive and thatwould be the quickest solution most likley

Ok, I went to the dealer and he said that there were several solenoids that control third gear. Were you referring to the ones that are actually in the valve body? He said they cost $23 apiece. Does that sound about right?

Thanks,

The 4L60E uses 2 shift solenoids. Both solenoids are the same. $23 a piece sounds about right for dealership solenoids.
