4L60E slow to downshift

I have a 94 Z28 a4 with 52K and a 3.23 rear. I have changed the fluid and filter recently and under normal driving it is fine. But I notice under hard acceleration it doesnt seem to react (downshift) as quickly as I think it should. Is there a way to diagnose this problem or is this just the way the 4L60s are in general ? It just feels a bit lazy to me.

Do you mean upshift? Downshift is when you are slowing down.

As far as I know it is normal for it to do this. You can upgrade the servo for a better 1-2 shift. 2-3 shift is a little harder to get to shift quick, because the 2nd gear band has to disengage and fluid applied to the 3-4 clutch pack.

Im sure the resident experts can give you a better explanation on this.

Could be a lazy 3-2 downshift solenoid. Tune and TPS also play into this. Is the upshift timing right?

Re: 4L60E slow to downshift

Here are the stock shift settings, to let you know when the PCM shifts and then compare to when you feel the tranny shift. If they don't compare then, you are not stock tuned or the tranny is not acting correctly. They are from a '95 3.23 tune but s/b the are same for a '94.

The right side 'Normal Mode Table ' is for normal driving (non-WOT) it shows when the PCM commands the upshifts and downshifts based on speed and throttle position during street driving

The other tables are for WOT or PE and are called Kickdown mode, the bottom left tells the PCM when to activate the PE or Kickdown shift tables that are above it. As you can see stock setting enter Kickdown at 94.5% TPS exits at 89.5 %

You have to satisfy 'BOTH' of the top tables to shift, it's an 'AND' condition. EG: to shift into 1st>2nd in Kickdown mode you have exceed 36 MPH and 5344 RPM, 2nd>3rd 73 and 5440.
