4l60E POS or bad mechanic

Here goes, I had my transmisin rebuilt (4l60E) a year ago because of the 3-4 clutch pack going out on it. I had a local transmision shop rebuild it for me and they gave me a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty.I also installed a trans cooler to help the life of it. Everything was fine for about 6 months and then wham, 3-4 clutch pack goes out again, so I take it back to them and they fix it again and I had them put a daco 2500 stall in it. I get it back and everything seems good and a week later the damn thing goes out again lose 3rd and 4th, I think a shim went out this time and caused the 3-4 clutch pack to go out. This time he tells me that he went thru the transmision and everything looks good. I get it back and make a trip to florida and come back home 600 miles round trip and everything seems good. As soon as I get home I take it to the body shop and have the whole car painted, and they have it for 3 months. I get my car from them and everything is doing great and have it a month and now the whole transmision goes out lost 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th. Ok now I am pissed, called the transmission shop and told them about it and they tell me the warranty ran out two weeks ago and they would have to charge me for any parts that they replace in it this time. After all of this I have'nt even put 10,000 on the car in 1 year. I sure could use some help, and opinions on this before I go off on this transmision shop.

Thanks, Mike

4l60 has a few flaws that if the shop doesnt know it will go out over and over. really gives a dependable unit a bad name. find a shop, or you can pm me and i could give you the name of a guy that can build one that will hold. or at least can tell you what to do to make it right.

ditto, the trans is not to be blamed. The 4L60E has gotten a bad rap over the past few years but if it is built right it will be very dependable. Sounds like the trans shop you are dealing with keeps missing the problem. Obviously there is something wrong with it and they are not fixing it. They are simply fixing the symptoms and not the true cause. The clutches keep going south due to some other problem. Find a new shop... you paid for a trans and it failed several times during the warranty period. The next one should be covered because the original problem (which is what they were contracted to fix) was not resolved. The repated failures was reported during the warranty period. Anyway you look at it that shop will have a hard time making that stand in small claims sourt. They owe you a working trans or your money back. Personally I would opt for the money and go find a new shop who knows the 4L60E.

Re: 4l60E POS or bad mechanic

I've built 4L60E's for low 11 second cars that have went several race seasons without incident. One car in particular was running 11.0's @ 124 MPH. The transmission lasted until it broke the OUTPUT SHAFT! When I took the transmission apart to fix the shaft, the 2-4 band looked like brand new and the 3-4 clutches were still in good shape.

It's obvoius that your transmission builder isn't very qualified. There are many things in a 4L60E that need to be addressed...Fortunately, I've been building race transmissions for over 14 years, so I know most of them.

Just out of curiousity, did the shop install any kind of shift kit? You know Trans-Go shift kits are NOTORIOUS for causing premature 3-4 clutch failure, right?

I'm not much of a fan of the 4L60E, but if shops actually knew how to rebuild them right they'd have a much better reputation. If you're getting your transmission rebuilt it should last at least as long as the original, unless the shop didn't do a thorough inspection/replacement of all parts.

Re: 4l60E POS or bad mechanic

Thanks for all the replys, I received my car back today and I hope it holds this time. They replaced the pump with a rebuilt one for 125.00 and 3-4 clutchpack again. They tried to charge me 526.00 for labor and parts this time. I told them I was not going to pay for the labor and paid 200.00 for parts. Hell, I could have bought a new b&m turbo 350 for 620.00 and put in there. Would increasing the line presure help prevent 3-4 clutchpack failure? or would it do more harm than good?

12SCNDZ-I did'nt have a shiftkit put in. I would like one put in but, I dont know weather it would help the life of the transmision or not.

This is my opinion also, there are just too few places that seem to get the 4L60e rebuild right, even for a practically stock car.
