4L60E Convert to M5?

Can it be done.... im sure i will need an ECM tune, but a friend of mine has a 96 RS with a 5 speed manual, and he wants my trannie, a 4 speed auto with a shiftkit. Everything is interchangable to my knowledge, is there anything i have overlooked? can the transmission in the RS handle V8 power? that was our only concern... or HIS only concern actually, i think it would, its not the 6 speed in most Z28s, but its a brand new 5 speed... and i dont think a 5 speed would be any more prone to damage from high torque than a 6.... but what about bolt on? will it fit? and will it take the heat im trying to throw at it? HELP! thanks to all of you in advance for any help contributed to this... i need someone with real world experience in swapping out trannies like that... any takers?

Well, you could jack up both cars and take measurements of the length of the driveshaft, compare the bolt pattern of both transmissions, and if the bolt patterns are too similar then measure from bolt to bolt and compare. If the 5speed can't handle the torque, it can always be rebuilt to handle more power. Take the T56 tranny, one of the best in the world......built professionally can handle 700+hp. I know the 5speed doesn't share the same spotlight in performance (if it did, there would be lots of high perf. ones for Z28s), but rebuilt it should be able to take the power you want to throw at it.

I know you know this already..........but I'll say it anyway. You could just get a T56 6speed.

yeah, but heres the problem, i dont have the cash for it, and since its an even trade in parts for the 5 speed, all i need is to pay my way in labor to get the conversion done.... catch mah drift? i dont know anyone with a 6 speed that wants to trade for an auto.... even with my shiftkit....

nah, just means i need to ask a tranny guy what he thinks of the "bullet proof"-ness of a 5 speed tranny out of a 96 RS..... i figure only they will know if the bolt up will work, as well as the strength of the tranny..... but thanks man... damn... kinda sucks when only 1 dude replys to a post about something as custom as this, in a forum like this, and he happens to be a personal friend lol

Ugh, I'd stay away from that 5 speed. My $$ says the LT1 breaks it fast.

Do it right and get the T-56....
