4l60e or 700r4 ?????

I have a 95 camaro with a 4l60e and im not sure on what direction to go with my trans. I have nothing but problems with my first rebuilt 4l60e. It wouldnt shift at wide open throttle just bounce off of the rev limiter. I would have to let off the throttle for it to shift. When i would do a hot lap a the track it wouldnt leave hard after the first run also. I was at the tunner twice and back to the trans shop trying to solve the problem. The trans shop put in another valve body but same problem. Now the trans is gone no third or fourth gear, so im going to get a new trans. I was leaning towards a perfomabuilt level 2. I am just nervous that the problem is in my tune and cant get anyone to tune it properly and to be honest i dont want to go to another dead end tune. I was thinking about just going manual valve body but wasnt sure if i should get a 700r4 with manual valve body or 4l60e with manual valve body. Or should i get another 4l60e and try it again. ha. I just want to eliminate the possibilty of disapointment again haaa. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks for reading and happy holidays.

FYI my setup is a 383 lt1,3600 trans specialties converter, 12 bolt with 4:11 gear.

4L60E will work fine at your power level but if you or your mechanic or your tuner can't set it up electronically, then you might have problems. As far as shifting goes, there are a few parameters you have to look at. Besides the normal tables, you have the downshift tables and they have to be set up to meet both rpm and mph criteria or it won't shift when you want it to. If you have a lot of slip because of your converter, you have to take that extra rpm into consideration in case you're not going as fast as you think for your shift rpm and it also takes a little while to shift, so you have to anticipate that, too. The thing also has a 1-3 shift mode when it senses too much slip - especially common for converters >3000 stall, so there is a parameter to set to make that not happen. But the builders these days know how to make a stout 4L60E and if you can find somebody that knows what they're doing in the setup then you're in business.

Re: 4l60e or 700r4 ?????

Here's an important question. Was your 4L60E built by a 4L60E builder or a trans shop that just happens to build 4L60Es? There's a HUGE difference between the 2. Most "generic" builders don't know what these transmissions need for performance use. To complicate this even further, there are alot of builders out there who think they do...LOL The problem you were initially having with it bouncing off the limiter sounds like a timing problem. Nost likely from someone building it who's not familiar with the 4L60E. Your current problem is, your 3-4 clutches are wasted. This is also a common reoccuring problems with novice builders. We have 4L60Es in 9 second cars, so we know it's possible to build them to work and last. A 700 is a step backwards, as is any type of manual valve body. A good trans builder and a good tuner can get the 4L60E to do what you're asking. I, personally wou;d suggest PCMFORLESS for the tune.
