Re: 4l60e or 4l80e?

The 80 is a heavier duty tranny GM used it their trucks, there have been a few people that were able to put them into F-bodies, but it takes the same amout of work as it would to swap in a TH400.. The 80 will give you 4th gear over the 400 but will be quite a bit weeker... But like the TH400 the 4l80e has a little more drivtrain power loss then the 4l60e... There are guys running 10's with the 4l60e and I know Frank at CPT is building his 93Z so that he can test his 4l60 in the 9 second range and se how it holds up... If upgrading from the 4l60e and it is a race vehicle then go the TH400 route, but first find out if you need to upgrade...

How much power do you plan on throwing at the tranny? What do you use the car for? Answer those and that will help give an idea if you need to upgrade...

check out the link in my sig then look around the site by clicking on the logo in the top center of the page and look at the other cars running this tranny, there are a few guys running N2O and have more mods then you that can hold the 4l60e without problems...

Where are you located? DHL only charges us $150 to ship a transmission from Maryland to California.

Thanks,
Frank

The 4L80E is an overdrive version of the TH400. It's a fairly strong unit, but it has it's weaknesses, too. They were never factory installed in a 4th gen. A swap is labor and cost intensive. Many I've seen do an '80E swap into a 4th gen, end up swapping back, because their cars slow way down. an '80E is MUCH heavier, and it soaks up too much HP to turn it.

You'd be much better off to go with a GOOD built 4L60E. As John (1SLOWFORMULA) has mentioned, there are places that specialize in racing / performance 4L60E's. Much of the 4L60E's bad reputation is due to people having them rebuilt by "general transmission shops"...or...even some claiming to be able to build them for racing. Check carefully about reputation. There is atleast one shop specializing in racing '60E's who have outstanding prices, and customer service. You'll pay about the same for a bulletproof 60E as you'll pay for a base rebuild at most shops.

Well, I'm not sure how serious you are about swapping a 4L80E, but it will cost WAY more than a 4L60E from Frank. I am also willing to bet money that you won't find someone who can build a 4L60E like Frank. No one wants to pay the extra money in shipping, but I'm telling you it's worth it.

It doesn't matter how much motor you've got if you can't use it..You cannot skimp on any driveline component, period...If you can't do it now, just wait and save...Do it once and do it right..Do not compromise quality and durability...
