4l60/ 96 Z-28 ???

I'm looking at buying a 96 Z but only has 1st and 2nd gear. 3 and 4th is just like "N". I'm wondering if it needs a new trany or if it is a computer problem. Trany fluid looks and smells good./????? HELP.....
THANKS, CURT

If there trans neutral on the 2-3 shift then there is some issue with the 3-4 clutch and its likey failed in some way. While fluild color and smell can be a good indicator there are other types o failures that will not cause any indication there, The most comon i have seen with a sudden failure is the drum breaking out at the 3-4 clutch snap ring. In any case you are looking at a rebuild or replacement trans. But hey if its a good deal may be well worth it.

Yup...Most likely the 3-4 clutches. They're a weak area in stock (and some "built" 4L60E's. Fortunately, we know how to keep them alive...Even in the 9's
