400?

hey everyone, i wanna do a 400 tranny because they are cheap and way more reliable in heavy power applications. but the 400 is longer than the stock tranny so i would need a custom driveshaft right? Or could i buy one for a 400 swap. Also the bellhousing bolts do not line up, what do I do about this? Can I buy a new one or what? and the most important is the computer. The 400 is a not computer comtrolled, so what do I do about this? I have no clue about the computer situation???? If anyone could help it would be fantastic. If you could list where you bought your paerts and all that would be great. Thanks in advance!!!

Re: 400?

So, we're assuming you have a mid 9 second car? That's the only level where you ever consider a 400 swap. There have been counless threads on here relating to this subject. What it boils down to is, you spend $2000 to put a 400 in place of a $1400 4L60E that has O/D and will handle the power most on here are putting out.

Re: 400?

Go with a Pro Race 4L60E from Frank....you will not regret it. Frank has always gone out of his way to help me and educate me. He stands up to his work 110% - you will not regret doing business with him. I have put almost 7k hard miles on my CPT 4L60E without a hiccup.

Re: 400?

well if you do have the cash, go ahead and go with one of the big three that are on here all the time. I have faith in them, just dont have the coin to get one.
frank, it wouldnt cost $2000 if you already have a trans./conv. to put in a car. so if someone could answer his questions that would be great.

you can use a speedo gear set up from an 89 454 SS chevy pickup (new at a dealership or online will be around $200)
Ive heard you can use a 6 speed crossmember and open the mount hole a tad to fit.
dont forget you'll need a new torque arm that will mount the arm to the crossmember or floor
the other option is b&m makes an adapter for the arm to a th400
the trans will bolt right up to an LT1, and an LS1 all but one hole will line right up. the very top hole in the LS1 will not be used, and one on the pass. side of the trans there will not be a hole in the block for it. Ive seen it done before w/o a problem. or, there's a company on here that makes a th400 case that will match the LS1 engine.
you'll need a custom dshaft
dipstick tube
trans mount
torque conv. bolts/flexplate bolts
ratchet shifter (stock one wont properly line up the gears)
I "think" the torque conv. will bolt up to a stock flexplate, but Id recomend an SFI approved plate.
and you'll need a custom tune to match the speedo output teeth count and clear out all the other unneeded stuff that is trans related since the th400 is hydraulicly (spelling?) controlled.

if your goin fast enough to need a 400, you'll need to replace the dshaft, torque arm, and flexplate anyways. so you really cant count that in as part of the swap. cause the stock crap isnt goin to work for you anyways with a 4L60E even though it will bolt up still.

Re: 400?

Thanks for the help man, actually my car is under the gun with basically the same setup you have. Big nitrous,225ccheads and tsp 601. 609. cam. with 4.56 gears. im looking for maybe high 10's on motor and high to mid 9's on the shot. So I dont know if a built 4l60e will hold.

Re: 400?

Id say def. not on the juice, and N/A Ive seen it done, and these guys will tell you it'll take it, but Id question how long it would live. esp. if your goin to run it at the track often.

and Id def. say that setups a good couple notches above mine :P one day though.

A 350 isn't any stronger than a properly built 4L60E.

Go to the top the screen you will see a menu bar (redish with white writing), just above the advertisers thing that is there.

The first Menu option is User CP - this is your control pannel to set this palce up just how you like it - click on that...

Then you will get a few option boxes along the left hand side, the first one there should say "Edit Signature" - click on that and type info about your car or whatever else you want to put there...

How high do you spin this motor? How big are your slicks? I noticed you're running 4.56:1 gears.

Re: 400?

what is your raceweight, that is something to be considered as well. Your gears will help a tranny live better than gears like my 3.23
