4.10 whine, need help

I have searched and researched for weeks before this to attemp
to avoid getting a whine...

I just got a gm 4.10 ring and pininon, and a motive master install
kit... had it professionally done... whole rear end housing out of car
and bench installed to tolerences and specs... with perfect paste
patterns

now I have a slight whine at 60mph real 60, I already recalibrated
the speedo...

it is not very loud... I have a cut out, and can not hear it
in 4th gear over the exhaust,,, but in 5th 6th and neutral
I can hear it...

it is in accel decel and coast... louder turning to the left..
and gone turning to the right...

My installer said it is an outer axle bearing,,,
but that does not make sense to me,,, as it did not do that yesterday
before the swap...

but when driving it and it not doing in turning to the right,,, makes
me wonder... he said if i buy the bearings and seals, he'd install
both sides for free...

so i will do them... but do you have any suggestions on what
else to check since we will have it all apart again????

or is this a possible 4.10 whine that i will be living with?

thanks!
have it all apart again

2000 SS
torsen series 3

Thanks

Re: 4.10 whine, need help

Louder on turns sounds like a wheel bearing to me. The guy might have disturbed it while he was doing your gears, who knows. Gear whine with high ratios is fairly normal. You should consider yourself lucky, I did mine myself and it's somewhat intrusive at 40 & 60 mph. At least I can't hear it over the exhaust @ WOT.

Also, the noise may not go away with just a wheel bearing change, the axle may have thinned in that area and there will be excess clearance. There are of course, special bearings you can buy at the parts store to move it to a different area if you want.

mine were quiet until i took mine to the track 3 times, have about 1200 miles on the new gears and they whine little. Its just normal with these gears. Just something to get used too

Re: 4.10 whine, need help

my rear has all new parts, and motive gears setup by the dealership and it cry's at different speeds, actually I like to think that they're singing to me- -- Mines not to bad, I try and stay out of the speeds where it whines the most. It is hard to get those 4.10 gears not to whine, so consider yourself lucky that you have so little of it.
