4.10 gears.. any makes to avoid?
4.10 gears.. any makes to avoid?
Have a idiot indirect relative with a 99 he's trying to sell at about 80k miles. minor body damage from hail (was going to repaint anyway) and maybe a blown rear. I haven't seen it yet, and am slightly concerned that he burned up the original clutch at 40k..
in any event, part of the condition of me buying the thing could be that he gets 4.10's put in. Any manufactorer's I should be warned about to keep him from pulling a fast one on me?
Long term intent for me on this is LT's, heads, swap to a TR224 cam, and some other odds and ends. Even if I go crazy and put in giggle gas, I doubt I'd ever surpass 480 rwhp/tq (and if I do, well, I'd expect to eat the cost).

I really don't think it matters
. Regardless, when you start going with deeper gears, they will have a naturally inherent gear noise to them, it just varies from case to case how loud (or quiet) they are. Richmond's have seemed to earn a good (bad) reputation for selling noisy/whiny gears (I had a loud set of their 3.73's) but now I have Richmond 4.10's and they're barely louder than my factory 2.73's were!
I've heard that Motive gears (I think they're GM?
) are supposed to be quieter on average than Richmond's, but then again, one of the guys on here recently got Motive 4.10's and they're noisy
.
In short, it's a coin toss really!
You could get good gears or bad gears from pretty much any manufacturer

Yup I am the guy with the Motive Gears and yes they are noisy, worth the noise very fun to drive. After reading Captn post about his 4.10 install I was sold and had them installed asap. Well worth it.
