3rd gen versus 4 gen axle width

What is the overall axle width of a 3rd gen versus a 4th gen? How much narrower per side is the 3rd gen versus the 4th gen?

I've found everywhere between 2" and 2 5/8" narrower per side between the two gens.

My dilemma is that I already have a set of 15x10 wheels with 5.5" backspacing and I got a killer deal on a third gen housing, Moser 35 spline axles (for 3rd gen) and Strange center section. Now I'm trying to see what I need to narrow the rear to to make it all work.

third gen rear is shorter. Not 100& but I think 3/4" shorter on each side.

Why not ask the guy selling to measure it end to end.....

I've check at a few sites and I can't seem to get a firm answer so I figured I'd ask the experts here. Your right, it is narrower but by how much?

I already have the rear end and I trying to see how much I need to narrow it to fit my wheel/tire combination plus bringing the tires more into the wheel opening.

You have what rear?

From reading it...I take it you have a 4th gen car, a 3rd gen rear you want to swap in? is this correct?

Your wheels would need the axle tube to be 2" shorter than the stock 4th gen anyway with that wheel.

I have a 4th gen and I own a 3rd gen 9" ford housing. My reasoning for wanting to make this swap to a 3rd gen width (or close to it) was to get away from 7" back space wheels and save some rotating weight.

I'm hoping a third gen is 2" narrower each side but either way I'm sure I'll be cutting it to get the exact fitment. I would like the measurements so I can formulate the rest.

The dimensional drawings on the Strange website, for the bolt-in replacement 3rd Gen and 4th Gen 12-bolts shows that the overall width of the 3rd Gen rear is 3" narrower than the 4th Gen.

Thanks! I've looked about all day in here and I didn't find it. I'll check out strange's site too.

I found out the 3rd and 4th gen width dimensions on the strange website also, but I'm trying to find out the width of a 2nd gen rear axle too. Can anyone cite a reputable source for this information?
