3200 stall
Re: 3200 stall
A 30 spline 700 converter will physically fit in your '97, but it won't work long. GM changed the lock-up strategy in '97 for the 4L60E. Instead of off/on, it was changed to allow the converter clutch to slip some. If you watch TCC percentage in a datastream (with a scanner), you'll see TCC % going all over the place. The computer commands the amount of slippage. Because of this, they had to start using a new style lining on the converter clutch. I've seen people install an early converter in a late 60E and toast the converter on a trip around the block.
As far as 3200 stall in a daily driver? I did it for 3 years with a 3200 stall 10.5" ProTorque converter without any problems. Just make sure you've got a good additional/external cooler on it. Run it "in series"...Through the radiator first, and then through the external cooler.
