3:73's or stock ?

Anyone here know how much better 3:73's do for a 6speed car ?
I dont want to use 410's again , was to many RPM's on the highway for me . So i was wondering what kinda difference 3:73's would make ? anyone ever used 3:73's w/a 6 speed ? I was told it dont make much a difference then 3:42's

I was told the same thing, didn't make that much of a difference. I would stick with 3:42's.

Yeah , know what , i think i will . 410's is to much gear for the LS1 . the thing wants to break free thrue 1 and 2 with the 3:42's
My LT1 was going thrue tires in 3500 miles w/410's and you cant stomp it in first it just spins , not to mention my gas milage went to crap

we have torque on our side so we don't need gears like the "other" pony car needs so badly (usually there first mod)

We don't need all the other mods we do either, but :I do 70 MPH at 2000 RPM what do you mean too high RPM that's slow. either keep it stock or put in 4.10's 373's are a waste.

For my 99 Z28 with a few boltons, my 3.42 rear has a whining at 50 mph only on accel, so I'm thinking the teeth on the gears must be wearing down wierd.. So I decided to get 3.73's (Slp has a special that also includes the install kit) to replace em.. (and bought a used cleared hypertech programmer).. Else I would have stuck with the stock 3.42's..

going from 3.42's to 3.73's is only about a 9% gear reduction.. vs. 4.10's would be 20%

Only thing I don't like about the stock gearing is that "dead" zone when starting from a roll.. and the relative dead zone when your below 3000 rpms.. so I'm thinking 3.73's will be just the tweak I want..

Else with 4.10s, I'll be spininng the tires off the line, when I'm powering out of a turn (can already feed too much gas in with 3.42's coming out of a turn!)., and the gears will be a little too short for my taste.. Plus the 4.10's are weak (although there are 4.11's with a differnet tooth count that may be a bit stronger?)

Thats what i was thinking , the dead zone is a good way to put it .

Just put them in, feels great.. Easier to pull off from a line now, but not too excessive. Its just the hair shorter gairs that I wanted.

3.73s feel great behind a six-speed. Like the car should've come with them stock.

They weren't a dramatic change, but the car has a little better kick down low (the dead zone you were talking about,) without affecting mileage or highway driving.

Id stick w/ the 342's..if you want 6spd gears go for the 410's..but id spend the money elsewhere

410 is way to much gear for this car , its bad enough tying to keep it on the ground with the 3:42's

I also agree that 4.10 is way too much gear. Traction becomes an even bigger problem, which'll offset any potential acceleration gains.

And it'd also be hell on your 10-bolt. Once you trap in the 110+ mph range, the 4.10s can cause you to have to shift to 5th before the traps, which'll slow you down a lot.

I agree with this completely. You CAN feel a definite difference with 3.73s over the 3.42s. If you drive with them back-to-back you'll see what i mean. I can't get traction anywhere in first with the 3.73s on the street like it is so 4.10s are out of the question. A few friends of mine with LT1s that went to 4.10s later switched back to either stock or 3.73s because of the traction problems and all the shifting going through town (literally they were constantly shifting, too much IMO). One thing i love about the 3.73s is the way you can drive it... shifting at around 2200rpm i usually only use 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 6th while driving it and it doesn't bog the engine. And from a roll it doesn't matter what speed you're going when you decide to downshift and punch it cause you'll end up right in the meat of your powerband... the gearing is damn near perfect.

With the LS1 4.10s would be the better choice, IMO, if you could just get traction in first (and if you don't mind more shifting). If you've ever thought to compare dyno graphs between the LT1 and LS1 you'll notice they're generally dead even on hp and tq at around 3500rpm. Before that the LT1 makes better numbers and after that the LS1 just takes off and pulls like crazy all the way to 6000. After driving mine everyday and driving a few LS1s on dealer lots, in my experience this appears to be right. Taller gears will let you take advantage of that top end power since you have to rev the LS1 to make it happy. Just my $.02
