3.42's + 3000 stall... good or bad?
3.42's + 3000 stall... good or bad?
My car is an A4, stock 2.73's right now. Looking to do the gears and thinking about doing the TQ as well while someone is in there. Is that a good combination for a streetable car? How much do you think installation is going to run me. My car see's more street time (city and highway) then track time, so driveability and gas mileage need to stay good. I just want a little more umph if you know what I mean!
Thanks for the help!
Mike
PS... what brand do you reccomend? TCI, Vigalante, Yank? Thanks again

Get a 3200 to 3600 stall with a 2.0 str first. You should pick up a full half second at the track. If you still want more low end then add the gears. Don't forget that when you change gears your speedometer will need to be corrected so it will read correctly.
Anything you do to your car that increases horsepower will affect traction. Adding a torque convertor is the same thing. You just have to learn that part throttle is sometimes faster than just flooring it.
Thanks again for all the input. I'm really clueless when it comes to drivetrain type questions. I guess I'm going to do a 3200 stall w/ 2.0 str.... and a TA girdle as well. I hope I don't screw this up! Should I do the gears (3.42) as well? Other then a loss of traction will there be any benifit?
Thanks again,
Mike

Now what do you mean when you say loss of traction? If you slam it off of the line, yes, you'll see a loss in traction. When I first had my 3.73's and 2800 stall, I'd peel practically everywhere I went. After learning how to play the gas, I didn't do it any more.
I guess I'm worried about the driveability of the change. I know that mashing the gas off the line is probably going to equal mad tire spin. I really don't have plans about going to DR's or ET's atm. I want to improve acelleration and the fun factor of the car. Is the stall and gear combination going to make sticky tires a must, or will good street tires be okay?
What if I stayed w/ 2.73's? What stall and STR should I shoot for? Sorry about all the questions.... I just want to make an educated choice.
Thanks,
Mike

Last month I installed a 2800 Vigilante in my 95 Camaro. I too was very concerned is this too much, is this not enough, will fuel ecomony suck.
It does not stall at 2800 RPM, nor did I expect it to. I have not seen it stall at less than 3500 RPM, 3700 is more common. I run 2.73's, the traction with that was great, mash throttle very little wheel spin.
I mash throttle now I have tire smoke, while moving I have tire smoke. Very enjoyable.
The thing locks up around 50 mph, and then it feels stock on highway. Mash it and the revs really climb fast, I am thrown back in the seat at 70 mph.
One more, you know that dead spot after 2200 RPM's till 3100 RPM's or so ? Its gone. Just amazing.
