3.23 worth changing to 3.42?(1997 Z28)
Im really on the fence on what to do,
i would like to up my cam to a 218/224 cam, like the sound, but it would cost around 1200 total including shop labor, so i was thinking maybe bumping up my gear to a 3.42(got 3.23), I have an auto-- dont think i need 3.73's--Would there be a noticeable sotp feel to the gear change and if so what set gives the least amount of trouble? A GM gear? What all to get get? My updated mods are in my sig--Thanks for your help in advance. Dwayne

Re: 3.23 worth changing to 3.42?(1997 Z28)
that's only a 6% increase in gear ratio....not worth the $$ or effort
maybe if you had a whole rear end laying around, with low miles, and had a programmer to change the ratio on the ECM...but to buy the gears...NO WAY
kindda falls into the "go big or go home" thing....3.73s would make a nice gain.
you're prbably better off with a converter

I'll trade ya, you can get me a set of 4:10's and I'll give ya my 3.42's
I agree with teke184.. 3.73's are the way to go in an auto, You'll still have good driveability on highway without killing your gasmilage. At least that's my understanding of things heh.

DwayneObviously, a bigger torque converter would be the best addition for your car (especially with that bigger cam).
But since we've discussed this before and you don't want to upgrade that stock stall, I'd definitely get some 3.73's if you go with the CC502. Not only would 3.42's be a big waste of $$$ coming from 3.23's, but they wouldn't help much with that cam. And since you refuse to go with the bigger TC, I'd even do the 4.10's for max benefit with that cam on a stock stall...
Good luck,
Mike
