3.23 to 3.73 gears

First of all I have an A4. I am going to do a 3.23 to 3.73 gear change. What do I need to do after i change gears? I know I have to get speedo recalibrated but I also heard something about shift points? I am planning on getting a hypertech programmer for fixing the speedo. What are the shift points I should use for going to 3.73 gears?

recalibrating the pcm will take car of the shift points

i had 3.23 and went to 3.73's. all i did was have pcmforless update my program

i swapped entire rear ends with another guy in town, so i don't know what else you would need for a gear swap

why would you need to change shift points? Changing the rear end gears doesnt make your car shift at a different rpm.....it just gets up in the rpms faster than you would have stock. recalibrate the speedo and youre fine.

I heard you had to back it down a few mph or I would bounce off the rev limiter more than before. Just wasnt clear on that. What did you have to do for pcmforless programming?

Yes you need to have it programed. Because our cars shift based on the MPH not the RPM. When I went from 2.73's to 3.73's, it would shift quickly, and the speedo was off. Even after I had the ratio change, programed, it still hit limiter in the 2-3 gear change. Because the shop didnt re-program the shift points

I would get it reprogramed as soon as you do the swap, I put some extra miles on the car I didnt even drive, because I drove around with the PCM un-programmed, so it registured more miles then I actually drove. You can get a programer, or have a mail order tune do it. Or see if someone localy can do a edit for you. I dont recommend the programmer, because its over 300, and you'll probably use it no more then 2 times.

How does it put more miles on than you drove by a gear change??

ok according to the speedo I would be doing 45, but in reality the car was going 30mph, because the speedo was off. So I would have to speed up to 60-65, to do the actual speed limit. This put extra miles on the car. I put an extra 1,500 miles on my car, I never drove.

no

find LT1 edit if youre going to spend that kind of money. With that you can change everything from shift points to af ratios, timing, etc etc.

i didnt realize that these cars use the vehicle speed to say when to shift....seems kind off odd that they would do that.

Keep the gears and buy a torque converter, best mod for the money and will give more 3 to 7 tenths in the 1/4 the gears are only good for 1 to 1 1/2 tenths.

I don't do much dragging at the track if any..... Want something fun to screw around with around town. I've already changed my mind from headers to gears. Not changing again. Plus, i like smoothly taking off car, not one that jerks like hell to go. Also would like to be anywhere in1st gear and mash it down and break the tires loose.

What if you just raise the rev limiter a few hundred r p m .That should do the trick.
