2003 U-Joint Yoke Removal

I am installing a '03 Z28 rearend in a street rod I am building and need to remove the pinion carrier from the housing so I can do some welding on the axle housings. I have the nut off the pinion but the U-joint yoke will not come off easy. Is it necessary to use a puller to get it off and if so, will the bolts that hold the u-joint in place be strong enough or do I need to make a puller that fits behind the yoke?????

I put a piece of wood on the yoke and hit it with a hammer but it did not break loose. Am I just being to cautious or is the puller needed?? Appreciate any help from someone that has replaced the pinion shaft seal before.
