Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4

Gary,
Steve said you were having problems with your flywheel, he told me to take mine when I get it and the stock one to commercial to get it balanced before the install.

Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4

Just an update. I pulled my clutch back out on Thursday and inspected it. I can tell by looking at the flywheel and pressure plate that something is not right. The flywheel has hot spots on only about 1/2 of it and the other half is fine. The pressure plate is the same. Another weird thing is that the disc has a perfectly even wear pattern on one side and hardly any wear on the other side. I called Spec yesterday and he told me to email him a bunch of pictures and he will let me know what they want to do. Hopefully they will send me out everything new since obviously the flywheel or pressure plate is warped. I'm shooting for getting it back on the road by next Friday!

Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4

i have specIII and billet steel flywheel, first 200 miles or so were rough, now with a few grand on it, still holds like a CHAMP, broke my axle the week after i installed it at the track on 245 nittos555r's feels stock, and hasnt slipped at all since i got it, highly recomend, unless your good bit modded, a specIII is all you need, i know someone with 450+/- hp and still hold perfect with alot of abuse...

Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4

well i figured id give an update to my problem. i ended up taking the clutch and flywheel out and sending it to spec. they said they found the flywheel was out of balance so they resurfaced it and rebalanced it. they also said they found the pressure plate was out a little so they replaced it along with the disc. well i put everything back together today hoping that it would be fine. WRONG!!!! it still has the same vibration although it is a little better than before. what im going to do now is take it all back apart again and put my old flywheel on with the new stage 4 disc and pressure plate, and check it and go from there. this is really pissing me off!!!!!!

Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4

well i finally determined the cause today. i took everything back apart and put the stock flywheel in with the new spec clutch. started it up, NO VIBRATION at all. so the cause is the f*ckin flywheel that was already rebalanced once. im taking the old flywheel and new one to an engine shop to see if they can match the balance of the new with the old. if they can't i think im going to send everything back to spec and get my money back.

Have you been sending your old flywheel to Spec to have them balance the new one accordingly?

That's no good. Having a flywheel incorrectly balanced can make life hard on bearings.

I have the billet steel flywheel too. I suspect either the flywheel or pressure plate is out of balance. I'm taking the car apart on wed. and then take everything to commercial engine to have them check the balance on it. After that I'm calling Spec again. Its a bunch of bull sh*t that I wasn't planning on dealing with. Oh well, thats what happens with aftermarket stuff.
Since you bought a new flywheel.. what did you balance it with? They usually come neutral balanced and come with a weight you bolt on for externally balanced motors.. might want to check that.
EDIT: yea never mind.. you already got it..

Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4

just to give a final update, the car is finally fixed. i ended up sending back the stock flywheel and the new spec flywheel back to spec. they matched the balance on the new flywheel to the old one. its finally good to go now!

Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4

I'm using a Stage 3 with stock flywheel for 2 yrs, 10k miles, almost daily driving, many track passes, ET Streets, and I still love this clutch! I would say the Stage 4 is the way to go!
