1st impressions of spec stage 4
1st impressions of spec stage 4
I finally installd my spec stage 4 along with a steel flywheel this weekend. All I can say is DAMN!!! This clutch grabs like crazy!! I think I'm going to send it back and get the stage 3. I knew it was going to be a grippy clutch but I wasn't expecting this. I primarily drive the car on the street and occasionally on the track so I think a spec stage 3 will do just fine. Granted I only have bout 50 miles on it but I called spec today and they said it isn't going to change much. What does everyone else who has this clutch think??
Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
Ok guys tell me if this makes any sense. Today after work I decided to go take the car for a drive and see how the clutch felt. It felt just fine today!! I was able to take off from a stop without giving myself wiplash. Yesterday when I would take off from a stop the clutch would grab as soon as I got it 1/4" off the ground and would not slip even a little. Today it grabs about halfway up and it slightly slips with some chatter. The only explanation I can think of is that it needed a few heat cycles to wear itself in. I did a bunch of running around yesteday and was parking it for up to a half hour at a time. What do you guys think????
Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
Yes clutches also need to heat cycle in. A bunch of normal stop sign to work and back driving to help seat them in. My stage 3 feels the same as a stage 4 car I drove. I read a few places where the sprung hub on the 3 made the car lurch harder taking off because the spring bottom out on the hub. My 2 star stage 3 had completely worn out springs. I will go with the stage 4 this time. I was just wanting to drive one with a stage 5 since I come off the line at 6000 or more. They dont last long at that RPM.
Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
Well it is definetly tough getting used to this clutch! I have about 75 miles on it now. It chatters like crazy when I take off from a stop or downshift when moving. I also noticed that I have a pretty bad vibration at all speeds. I have a feeling that I need to have my new flywheel balanced to the old one. Does anyone have any experience with driveline vibrations after a spec flywheel/clutch install??
Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
I had a stage 3 kevlar before the stage 4 and its a completely different clutch. The stage 3 never gave me any problems until last year when it started acting up. Before that it felt like stock, which is the complete opposite of the stage 4. Oh well, I just gotta get used to it.
Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
Well I have about 175 miles on it now and I take back everything I said about this clutch. In my opinion this is the only clutch to get. I am glad I didn't put in a stage 3 and have to worry about springs breaking. The chatter has already gone way down and the vibration I think I had is gone now. To anyone thinking about this clutch I say get it!!! Trust me the first 100 miles with it are rough, but after that its good to go!!!!!!

that's what clutch i plan on getting probably next spring now
this stock one just doesn't grab
Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
I'll put in another vote for the stage 4, I've got about 600 miles on mine. It hasn't had any chatter at all-except in reverse, maybe I just got lucky. But personally I found it easy to get used to.
Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
dude, u need to break the thing in first
i have a new stage 3 and i love it it is holding up great after a half year of abuse, i have heard that the stage 4 is very simular to the stage 3.

Re: 1st impressions of spec stage 4
What kind of flywheels is everyone using? Stock? Billet Steel? Billet Al? I am in need of a clutch myself but keep hearing about reliabilty issues of Spec clutches. Is that a thing of the past now? I currently have a single disk kevlar McLeod and love it but would like a little more holding power

Gary,
What do you recommend for me? Clutch/Flywheel wise??
Steve and I think that the "SS" will be good with a Spec Stage 3I with a Spec Steel Billet Flywheel with a Stock Throw out Bearing.
I am going to order one sometime this week and would like to know what you think!!!
My clutch is starting to smell alittle but still feels and grabs fine. But, after I go to Norwalk on the 23rd the Stock Z06 clutch will probably be toast!!!
Happy to hear that your car is finally up and running good. Hope to see ya soon!!!! Later
