I have a 97 Camaro RS automatic, and went to the mechanic where he pulled a 1870 code from the system. For the longest time I always drove in D, not OverDrive. For fuel economies sake I started using OverDrive that's when I noticed that during the time of the SE light going off, the car jerked going from first to second, the rest of the shifting is fine. He reset the light, and said I'd need the tranny replaced or I could take my chances and drive as is. If I drive in D not overdrive, and the SE light doesn't come on, is it worth replacing the tranny?

 

trans component slipping.....could be any number of things, but most likely the torque conv. clutch is wasted or the solenoid might be going bad. A known issue with these trannies though is the tcc regulator valve/bore wearing out. At any rate, unless you have any clue what Im talking about, you're not going to be able to fix this yourself besides changing the luckup solenoid which isnt expensive and its easy to do, but I wouldnt bank on that being your problem. I would guess your converter clutch is on its way out. Hows the fluid smell/look? Color, feel, etc. How many miles on the car, how many miles, what kind of mods, what kind of use does the vehicle see. Need more info to make a good suggestion.

 

Well the car has 89,000 miles on it, I checked the transmission fluid and it's red, which i'm assuming is a good color for it. I've noticed some people say if the transmission slips, the engine will go to high revs, but I've never encountered or felt any really wierd shifting issues. If I take it to a mechanic, what would the cheapest repair cost me, I really don't want to replace the transmition.

 

On top of all this, I've driven it in this condition with the SE light on for about 4 weeks. I didn't know the code 1870 code until today.
