1995 automatic trans "clicking" sound.

My rebuilt beefed up trans has a forward motion clicking whether in gear or neutral, engine off or running. Coasting backward, there is silence. At about 10mph, it's a click, click, click, etc that I can hear through the console, and from under the car. As speed increases, the click increases too, until it is too fast to notice, but at 30 - 40 mph it comes off as a whine ( really fast clicks). It seems to be near the tailshaft, and I do not think the driveshaft can make this sound, or can it? The trans was quiet for months, then one morning the clicking was there only when cold, now all day. Thoughts? Yeah, I will have to dop by the trans shop, but what might it be if I can fix it myself? Do I have any kind of attached cable drive?

Does the clicking sound go away in 2nd and 4th gear?

The little clicks are not gear specific. It clicks in neutral or in gear, engine off or running. It is in or near the tailshaft of the automatic transmission. I have checked the driveshaft for interference, but all looks as it should. Coasting backward, the clicking is gone, in forward motion, it is mildly annoying. I have throttled up hard, hazing the tires and chirping the shifts, to try to cause a change, but it is the same.
