12 bolt question
12 bolt question
I've got some extra cash on my hands and I'm thinking about getting a 12 bolt for the rear. I just finished building a 383 but rather than setup for the drag strip, I think I'd rather set it up for twisties.
Keeping that in mind, what should I consider when picking a rear end? Any recomendations? Are the Moser units sold through Thunderracing any good?

Moser makes a pretty good rear end. Just about any 12bolt should work for what you are going to be using it for. You might also consider a 8.8 conversion. They are cheaper and should hold up fine to road racing.
If you go ahead with a moser 12bolt a few things I would get would be the HD posi, the gundrilled axles and anything else you can do to lighten it up will help get more power to the ground.

Moser's a nice unit. Make sure you retain ABS and know which one you need when you order (3-channel is for most cars, 4-channel is needed for those with Traction-Control equiped cars).
If you can, spring for the aluminum cover (a MUST), and 33-spline axles if you have some high hp goals (although 31 spline will work fine for 400 to 500 hp).
If this is a daily driver you'll need a posi differiental. Open diff is pointless on ANY car (IMO), and a spool (or mini-spool) is only good for strip-only use. Eaton and Auburn posi's both have good reputations. Eaton has great customer support with warrantee claims as well (ask me how I know

I have the Moser Rear-end and it sings (makes noise) between 50 and 65 mph. I’ve talked to others with the Moser rear-end and they have the same problem. I was told that it was because of they have Pro-Street Gears. I’ve heard others say it’s because Moser don’t know how to set up the gears properly.
Some say Strange Rear Ends are more quiet and built better.

I didn't say it wouldn’t hold up. I am just saying $2200 plus labor it a lot to pay for a noisy rear end. Most of my driving is between 50 and 60 mph and it tends to bother me a little bit. Most of the times I just turn up the radio. But after paying that much for a rear-end, why should I have to? Do what you want. I am just giving you a warning, Moser Rear Ends are noisy.
