12 Bolt owners IN HERE
I now officially hate 12 bolts....had 2 now. Both started DEAD quiet, after few quick races FROM A ROLL they both started to make noise. NOT horrible noise but enough to drive me wild for spending 2K on a 12 bolt and have it whinne like a pos 10 bolt. I am really picky about the rear whinne, so i am sure the noise i am hearing wont bother 95% of you out there. BUT DAMN 2k and it still makes damn noise..i cant deal with that
One was Moser and now Strange. Can some one explain to me WHY THE HELL do they make noise after few hard shifts?????!!??! I can put a stock GM 3.42 rear end and it wont make any noise untill it just SNAPS out of nowhere. Why cant 12bolts be quieT!!! god i hate this ****....look for my 12 bolt to be for sale again, i think i am just going to buy stock 3.42 rear ends and kill them one by one.

your problem is your to damn picky. You buy a 12 bolt for strength not because it is quiet. The gears in a 10 bolt are made to be somewhat strong but really are made to be quiet. As where 12 bolts arent designed with noise in mind but more for STRENGTH. People say 9 inches dont whine but I be damned I had a 9 inch to and it was louder than my 12 bolt. I just belive that you are to picky and need to relize your going to get a little whine from something that isnt going to break Thats just my $.02

OHHHH SNAP! You gotta pay to play BOAY! Marcin he set you straight!
But anyways, yeah its always gonna whine... you are gonna whine about the whine, and both of you will end of whining together. Just a fact

Re: 12 Bolt owners IN HERE
Marcin, what gear ratio have you been running in the 12-bolt? Still using a 3.42? If you've gone to a lower ratio (whether it be 3.73 or 4.10), lower ratios will be louder, no matter what (shouldn't be screaming loud, but you'll hear them)). My Richmond 4.10's (in a stock 10-bolt) are surprisingly quiet! They make the slightest whining noise when I accelerate initally, then they're quiet the rest of the time.

directly from Mosers website
""There is a trade off. If you do race and have excessive horsepower, you will need an aftermarket gear. But keep in mind, the gears are made for strength and the ability to withstand the demands of racing. If you are using your automobile as both your daily drive AND your race car, can you live with more noise on a day to day basis? You need to decide this prior to purchasing aftermarket gears."
On a scale of 1-10 Mine whine at about a 3. It;s very much livable for me. If I wanted a quiet rear I would have just replaced it with a stock rear. same with my clutch. If I wanted a quiet engagment with no chatter I would have gone with a stock replacment instead of the spec 2.. it;s a trade off that you just need to deside if you are willing to take on.

Re: 12 Bolt owners IN HERE
Marcin,
I'm with you man, I've had 2 different 12 bolts and have had probably 6 different setups in both. I can get Richmonds fairly quiet out of the box, but 2 to 3 good launches on slicks and the noise starts. I've always had problems with US Gear R&P out of the box. I think the folks that claim quiet 12 bolts must not thrash them behind a T56. I've been thinking 9" also. You get a slightly larger ring gear and an outboard pinion bearing support.
Any of you 9" guys out there have a quiet one that stays that way behing a Street twin and ET Streets????

Re: 12 Bolt owners IN HERE
I can't say I've noticed my 12bolt make more noise then my 10bolt did. I've got an M6 and the rear is a Moser with 3.90 Richmond gears. Try spraying undercoating under the back of your car (on the under-body not the rearend itself), this might help.

Re: 12 Bolt owners IN HERE
How is your pinion angle setup? It should be at about -2 degrees. If your angle is not setup right your going to trash your rearend quick. I got a 9" myself and I have no complaints with noise or anything else

Re: 12 Bolt owners IN HERE
Well today i pulled the 12 bolt out and took it to my gear guy.
Since the rear end was hot the numbers we got were not accurate but they were within specs (cold specs). We will see how much the specs will change once the rear cools down. I am having Solid Pinion Spacer installed so hopefully that will help the pinion gear from walking around after the crush colar gets screwed up, altought thats not the problem with my rear so far. Ill post up tomorrow what exactly was causing the damn whine after few hard shifts

Re: 12 Bolt owners IN HERE
even though it's a 12 bolt you still have the chance to have the pinion come loose, expecially if it's got a cruch collar in it, my recomendation would be to have a solid spacer installed. i have set up many 12 bolts and ford 9" in f-cars and have had very good luck on keeping them quiet. i say find a very comfident shop that has experence in axle repair in your area, or come to the detroit area and see me.
i have a 3rd gen going 9.41 at 146mph and it still has a strange street gear thats a 4.33 and it is as quiet as a stock 10 bolt. and i leave on a trans brake, 1.33 60' to boot.
