10 bolt vs. 12 bolt

What is the differences of a "10b" vs. a "12b"? I have been reading on here that if I want to put in 3.42 or 3.73 gears I would need a to get a 12 bolt. I am kinda new to this and Don't know what a "10 Bolt or a 12 bolt" is, but I figure a 10 bolt is stock on my 1997 LT1.

Re: 10 bolt vs. 12 bolt

12 bolt is a bigger diameter rear end that is much stronger than our stock 10 bolt...the 10 bolt it a 7.5 inch diameter gear set...the 12 bolt i believe is 8.75 or soemthing...much stronger almost indestructable...10 in an auto will probably hold 1.6 60' a stick mayb 1.7-.8 for a while...stick is just much harder on the rear end with the jolt of a launch...

You mean 1.6 Seconds for a 60 foot launch??? If I put in 3.42 or 3.73 gears and leave the stock 10 bolt, will that be okay???

Ive heard there isnt a big difference between the 3.42 and 3.73's. Most people with a 3.42 switch to a 4.10 or 4.11.

Do you have an auto or stick? What are your mods?

Depends on other mods. If you're running a power adder or some serious power, the 4.11's are actually too much with a M6, and you'll be shifting into 5th at the end of the 1/4.

Personally with an M6, I'm running a Strange 12-Bolt with 3.73s, and I couldn't be happier.

first of im no expertbut..you will make it for a while...possibly...they say with only sticky tires and bolt ons you can trash it for an m6...problem if they keep adding more and more smaller teeth for a higher number gear ratio...so for an m6 with 3.42 you might last a while...for an auto you keep stock gears they are almost indestructable...a guy locally has stock 10 bolt with 3.23 26inch tire and cuts 1.3x 60'...consistantly...on drag radials...i would put gears in a m6 if i wasnt goana run from a stop ever...other than that keep it stock ot upgrade

Unless you have a specific weight/hp configuration to calculate top speed and rpm through the traps and can justify the 3.73 on that basis I would get the 3.42 gears. They are a little bigger and that should make them stronger vs. the 3.73. You will get more bang for the buck with a higher stall (2800-3200) torque converter than a gear change. Gas mileage and stoplight to stoplight performance will vary only slightly between all these gear choices. The cars make enough torque stock to blow away the tires. The torque converter gets you into a higher power band quicker vs gears multiplying the torque you already have.

Re: 10 bolt vs. 12 bolt

All '93-02 F-bodies have the 10-bolt rear. Start thinking about a 12-bolt as you approach 400rwhp. Not much to be concerned about if you have a V6, unless you have some serious power mods in your future (big boost, nitrous, or engine swap).
