10 bolt holding 400 hp + spray

I was talking to a guy i know from town that has a older s10 drag truck. Its a 383 strocker with a powerglide. He has the stock 10 bolt with a spool and MH cheater slicks. I was shocked to see him release the transbrake and float the front tires without hearing a loud boom. He said hes never had probablems with it and it is infact the stock 10 bolt from the s10. He was telling me about spraying at the track as well. How can a rear end hold up in conditions such as these, but break under 240 rwhp stock lt1's?

I believe the reason he can hold it without the Boom is because of the Spool. The axles are pretty much locked together and there are no pieces to break like in a posi unit.

Re: 10 bolt holding 400 hp + spray

The truck weighs less than a Camaro, I'd bet. Less mass = less peak loading on the gear face.

Besides, there's a lot of 10-bolts out there holding 400 HP, plus handling shock and launches to sub 1.6 second 60-foot territory. What do you think was behind the 320 HP LS1?

There are tricks to making a 10-bolt hold 400 HP but it can be done, and has been done.

I read somewhere that S-10s built with the 5 speed had the 8.5" 10-bolt.

I didnt even think about the weight difference. He said he was running a 2680 race weight.

Re: 10 bolt holding 400 hp + spray

Do you know what year s10 had the 8.5 10 bolts? Because I have several junkyards in my area, and I just blew my 10 bolt.

this spool you speak of, how hard would it be to put on in a 94z, and how streetable would it be?

Sorry to hijack thread. If you want i can move.

I personally do not know the answers to either of your questions, but hijacking the thread is fine with me.

TTT so maybe some one that can help you out with chime in.

That's an 8.5" 10-bolt...which is almost as strong as a 12-bolt.

Re: 10 bolt holding 400 hp + spray

Talked to a tech on rearends today, and he said that the s10's that had the 8.5 were the 98's and newer. He said that they would not fit under a camaro, that they were too wide. He said that ive only got three options: rebuild 10, 9", or 12 bolt.

I even asked about putting a mustang 8.8 in there and they said that would not work either.
