Re: 10 bolt crapped the bed
If you can source a used 10 bolt rear from a wreked Camaro, you can be up and running in pretty cheap..
$500 (thats on the high side too) can get you a 10 bolt replacement.. its still a tossup on the condition of it though.
A shop should be able to put it in easily.. The labor setting up new gears and all was more expensive than the actual labor of swapping out the rears..
After doing some reading or rear end installs, I'm starting to think perhaps I'll get a 12 bolt and try having the adventure of installing it myself...doesn't seem too difficult.. just hte fact the whole thing is just really heavy.. But thats half hte fun.. or 90% of the fustration..

But now, its turning into a money pit, and I'm starting to reevaluate things. Modding these cars just isn't a good investment, unless you have a garage with a lift, so you don't have to pay too much labor, and you plan to keep the for a long time. For someone like me, who lives in a dorm, and can't do things like swap an engine in the parking lot, it makes more financial sense to buy a car that does what I want it to do without needing much labor.
The big question is, should I get a loan and a used c5/03 cobra or just give up my hobby until I graduate and get another escort?
Keeping the fbody is also still an option, but its hard to not want to mod these cars, and the more mods I do, the more parts I'll break. The more parts I break, the more money I throw away into the abyss...
Either way, I have to make a decision this weekend, as my car has been sitting for a while, and the shop owner probably won't be tollerant much longer.
So my options are:
Sell? = + Money
4.10/4.30 10-bolt? (~$600 in parts + $300 in labor) = -$1000 (rounding up)
12 bolt (~$2300 in parts, ~$150 in shipping, ~$200 for brakes, ~$400 in labor) = -$3000 (rounding down)
None of them seem like good options to me..

Re: 10 bolt crapped the bed
My 12 bolt is coming soon, and it shouldn't be too difficult to install. My friend and I have done just about everything to my car so far. We're waiting for the new rear end so that we can install my new SLP suspension and Baer GT+ brakes all at the same time. New goodies = $5000 only months after my $10000 engine build.... Am I nutz or what!?
Re: 10 bolt crapped the bed
I am in college and deal with the same money issues you do. But I go by if you can't afford to break it, then you better not f***ing break it or you need to shell out cash to replace it. My car has done one awesome job of keeping me poor for the past few years so now I am careful. If I was in your spot I would find used rear 300-500 and take it easier off the line. An 03 cobra or a z06 would rape us on insurance. The cost of the 12 bolt would be paid out every year, just something to think about.

I agree with you there.. there is quite a raping on insurance.. I've been leaning twards just fixing the 10 bolt and trying to not beat it up too much..
I'm still hesitant on buying a 12 bolt, as you could replace (including labor, and an eaton posi the first time) about 4 10 bolts before the 12 bolt would begin to save you money...
I'm not a big drag stip guy.. maybe every couple of weekends during the summer, and even then, I try not to really launch the car hard, so I'm thinking I should do ok...
