Whats the up to date Snell rating I need for simple street car at the track?
Any good places to pick up a "cheap" helmet for someone with minimal use at the track

A M rated helmet is all you need. Open or closed face, your choice. Make sure it has a Snell 2005 rating since that's the newest and will last you for at least 10 more years. You don't need the more expensive SA rated helmets.
Check with your local motorcycle shops. An open face M2005 helmet should be under $100.

Unless it has a Snell decal on the inside, NO.
Some tracks may allow a DOT helmet for slower speed cars such as 14 second and slower. Contact your local track to find out
If you're buying a new helmet, it must have one of these decals on the inside of the helmet

The Snell 2000 expires 1/1/2012 according to the NHRA rulebook. Also, check-out this link.

Snell 95 is obsolete in NHRA and IHRA for 2008. Minimum requirement now is Snell 2000 or K98 (Karting helmet).
If you still have a 2000 rated helmet, it's still good. If you need to go buy a new helmet, look for a 2005 rating.
