what gear to keep it in when racing

i have heard many different views on this and i just wanted to hear some others with more input. when at the track should you be running in drive or overdrive and how come

Depending on what you have heard, they may not be views but fact.

Fact is, that you want to cross the 1/4 mile point (I assume you are drag racing) in your 1:1 gear (3rd for auto, 4th for manual) at the RPM value where your peak horsepower occurs.

Since your question relates to an auto you can leave it in either drive or overdrive. If your car shifts into 4th (overdrive) before you reach the end of the 1/4, you need more gear in the back.

From my prior experience with an automatic 4L60E I would say leave it in Drive. I would also not recommend manual shifting from 1-2-D. By "manual" shifting I noticed slower and inconsistent times at the track. I never noticed a difference from using OD compared to D, but unless you have changed the gearing you won't need to use OD at the track.

I always raced in OD. I took it as the PCM knew better than myself when it needed to shift
