What drag wheels and tire combo

hey guys, i was looking into getting some drag tires and wheels, it seems that 15" wheels will be the best because of the variety of tire sizes offered. im looking at the bfg drag radials and i dont know what wheel to get. where can i find reasonably priced wheels, new or used, but who has good ones and what size wheel do you recommend using without having any brake clearance problems. thanks guys

Question

How about firebird knock-off rims $50.00 apiece from slp with bfg drag radials 255-50-16 ? I could'nt figure out a cheaper way to do it.

sound like the cheapest way to go, i'll give it a shot. do you have any problems hookin up with them because they're only 255, or do they work great, and also, what should i do to warm them up, go thru the water or not?

Do you want Slicks or DOT legal? I used to have BFG Drag Radials on my '79 Z28 and ran a best of 11.88@114.88 with them. I wore them out and bought a set of Hoosier 29x10 slicks and have run a best of 11.79@112, and I have WAY better and consistant short times. I run Centerline Auto Drags, which are lightweight and relitively cheap (I guess). I have 15x7 on front, and 15x10 on back. I hope this helps.

Weld Draglites are fairly cheap, and common. I believe the 15x8 with 5.5" backspacing requires no caliper grinding.
I have 15x10's with 6.5" and another set with 7.5" bs. They required grinding of the calipers.
How much power are you trying to hook up? What kind of suspension work is done?
I ran mid 12's n/a with drag radials, but couldnt hook with nitrous.
Friend of mine runs low 9's and high 8's on drag radials in his mustang, but it took a LOT of work to get there.

I have no trouble hooking up, I go thru the water and spin hard in 2nd until the engine starts to slow, then I just let off the brake- ease off the gas. When I stage I "brake tourqe" until I think the tires are getting ready to break loose, light comes down I go. I feel like there is some room for me to grow with these tires, so I'm not worried about overpowering them anytime soon. Good Luck!

I'm looking at getting some draglites and slicks also. I saw someone with some before that stuck out of the wheel well. That looks gay to me. What backspacing would I need for 15x10s to fit? I have stock rear brakes. I can grind the calipers if necessary. Also is there an advantage of having 15x10s over 15x8s? Thanks.

For a 15x10 wheel, use a 7.5" backspace, to put the tire completely inside the fender line.

15x10 with 28" QTP's

The 15x10 just allows you to go to a much wider tire in the future. Follow the tire manufacturer's recommendations on rim width for the tires you are using.

Not sure that you wouldn't have to grind the brake fins with either the Weld Pro-Star of DragLites at 15x8. The interference occurs at the point where the center of the wheel meets the rim, so offset wouldn't make any difference.

There is quite a bit to be gained by using a 1982-92 width rear (bolts in). This will reduce your rotating weight (free horsepower). It will also allow you to run wheels with 5" backspacing (15" x 10" or 8") without them looking wrong. The lighter the wheels the faster you will go. Not important? Which sounds better 12.01 or 11.99?

Best Regards,

Daren
