Weld Pro Stars

I'm getting ready to purchase a set of Weld Pro Stars from Summitt: fronts--15 x 4, 5 x 3/4 in. bolt pattern, 2 1/4 in. backspacing, backs--15 x 8, 5 x 3/4 in. bolt pattern, 5 1/2 in. backspacing. My question is will the rear wheels fit w/o me having to grind the fins on the brake calipers? Mine are powdercoated as I show the car when not racing it. If these won't fit, what backspacing do I need to perserve the calipers and not have the wheels/tires stick out excessively from the wheel well? Thanks

AFAIK with Welds you will have to grind the calipers. Less than 5.5" BS and you will have interference problems with the fender, and the calipers as well.

Thanks for thr response. What I'm trying to figure out is why the Centerline star-style wheels w/ 5" back-spacing fit a '94 (at least according to the story in GM High Performance and their Grapes of Wrath project car) and Welds won't. Maybe GMHP is not reporting the full story.... Anyone else have an explanation?

It really doesn't have a whole lot to do with the backspacing, it's more the fact that it's a 15in wheel. Our cars weren't designed to run a 15in wheel in the first place, thus the 16s from the factory. The grinding on the caliper is inevitable with a Pro Star. I would imagine the reason the Centerline 15s fit, has something to do with the inner design of the wheel.

If you don't want to grind your calipers, I would go with another wheel...

Because the Centerlines are 5" backspace and not 5.5" Backspare.

With 15x8 Pro Stars you will have to SOME grinding even if you run a 5/16 spacer so maybe you should get some Centerlines.

You might check with Jegs. I think they have a little better price on the Welds.

If you want Welds get the Pro Star XP. They fit without any modification to the brakes at all.
I run 15x5 up front and 15x10 in the rear with 5.5 backspace, you might want to go with 6.5 backspace if you don,t want them to stick out, mine do but I like it that way.

I thought the XPs were heavier. Anyone know the weight differences?

I know that Weld Pro Star XP's on a LS1 will still require some grinding, ANY 15" rim that has the Weld backspacig will.

I had Weld Draglite XP 16x9/26x11.5x16's back in 00, and went mid 1.5's... no grinding...

They weighed the same as stock wheels, ~22-23 lbs.

Pic of 16x9's in back circa 2000...

15x8's with 28x915's in back circa 2001...

From what I gather (and after talking to the editor of GMTPM regarding the Grapes of Wrath project car), the calipers on '93-95 camaros are smaller than the calipers on '96-2002, Thus, the 15" Welds and Centerlines will fit on the rear w/o grinding fins from the calipers. At least the Centerlines fit on the GOW car w/o grinding anything. Thanks for all of the responses; they have been most helpful!

I had to do some grinding on my 93 fins to get the 15 x10 draglites to fit.

Do a search for Bogart rims. They are 15s that are designed for the 4th gen. Plus you don't have to change wheel studs and have spacer shims.

the centerline wheels are made differently than the welds, the welds have the rig on the inside that makes the inside of the wheels smaller in diameter than the actual wheel , thats what interferes with the calipers, to where the centerlines do not have this....and they clear the calipers.....guy at the local track had 15x10 warriors w/ I'd like to say 6.5 in BS and he said there was no modification at all needed.....Other that running a prochargered,383 and spinning the wheel in the tire
