weight reduction

what else do you guys do to loose weight besides remove the spare tire, jack, speaker boxes if equipt, sway bar, drag wheels. i want to know because i want to keep the interior stock, dont want to hack it up by taking out seats, carpet, sound material, crash support or anything similar to that. right now the car weighs 3700 and only running 13.6 @ 102 with every bolt on with a 2.1 60'. that was a rather cold day with limited traction when the track first opened.

other peoples racing weights with times would be appreciated.

well, you basically did as much as you can do without removing parts. Most people pull the backseat,it's damn near useless anyway, and doesnt look bad without it. Others pull ac,remove sound deadening from under the carpet (all which you dont want to do).

Dont feel bad, Just weighed in again today with the basic crap removed (tire, jack, etc), still 3802 lbs. Idont like the idea of removing the interior either but it looks like its gonna be a nessary evil to acheive my goals.

That's one of the reasons the Fox bodies will always beat the F-body. Mustangs have a weight advantage right from the factory. All F-bodies are/were heavy. If GM could have found some way to shave at least 500 pounds from the cars, even the 305's would have been performance cars.

My third gen is a completely gutted race car. Race ready it's 3175 pounds. Still heavier than I would like but there's not a lot left that I can remove.

You ought to be able to get quite a bit more weight out of your cars without killing all of the creature comforts. I would think that 3400 lbs would be a good number to aim for. My LT1 Firebird D/SA car weighs 3280 and my LT1 Camaro C/SA car weighs 3120, with me in them. Both cars have factory front seats, full interior panels, and all factory body panels including factory Ram Air hoods.

I just might be an authority on the subject since my car is at about 2800#'s but it is gutted. Some have gotten their cars to about 3100-3200 without losing any comfort. Here are some ideas:

1. Carpet backing. It's ridiculous how much crap is under there.
2. Air bags. Who wants something blowing up in their face while driving. The passengers is about 30#'s but is difficult to remove.
3. Light battery. Dynabatt works great and saves about 25#'s
4. Bumpers. These can be removed without changing the appearance. Very heavy.
5. Fiberglass hood. Saves about 35#'s. More if you get a lift off.
6. K-member. I haven't done this but should save about 30#'s.
7. Lighter seat. I traded my power seat for non-power but will eventually get a drag seat.
8. Sound deadening material. There is quite a bit throughout the car including under the dash on top. Use a heat gun and scraper.

Other items like door panels, , seats, a/c, etc, are quite heavy but you don't sound like you want to do that. I hope this helps.

Why does your car weigh so much? I would question the accuracy of the scales. I've had the opportunity to weigh mine twice right after the calibration was checked on the scales before a national event took place. With NOTHING removed and a full tank of gas, both times the weight was within a couple pounds with the heaviest being 3797 with me in it. I tip the scales at ~235, so the car comes in at ~3560 or so. And everyone knows T/A's are heavier than Z's

My 96 SS weighed in at 3750 with 'Ol Fat *** in the driver seat.

Sounds like it is in the ballpark with most other F-bodys. The LS1s have a couple of hundred right off the front end to help them.

Aside from destroying the interior or removing critical creature comforts, it seems like I will have to resign to just accepting the weight as an unfortunate factor.

Things like leather seats, electric windows, Cruise control mechanisms, air conditioning, front/rear seating, and sound deadening are into the hundreds of pounds.

I also suppose if you pulled all the glass out and went with plexiglas you could dump another 150#.

But then, why not just build a dragster and put a plastic Camaro body on it? Screw trying to be smog legal or actually enjoy your stereo.

...but running light feels so good!

And who needs a stereo anyway when you've got the rumble of a V8 to listen to.

And I thought the LS1's were only 75lbs lighter . For some reason though, I have heard of some LS1's outweighing LT1 cars stock for stock? I have always wondered where the extra weight comes in at?

My understanding is that electric windows actually weigh less than hand crank windows.

I dont really know, I tip in at 270 so thats a major player. When I weigh the car I usually check it with a full tank of fuel. At the end of last season it wighed 3821 and over the winter I removed the spare, jack and cleaned out the car and lost 19lbs which sounds about right. If you take me out of the figure the car is 3532, about 30 lbs lighter than you.........damn im fat.

Okay, I misunderstood. I thought it weighed that much without anyone in it. Sounds about right now that you explained it.
