Tire temps?

I see a lot of guys at the track with laser temp guns.

What temp range are they shooting for?

Depends on the tire. AFAIK mostly they just look to make sure they're even, and use it as a guide for adjusting tire pressure or other suspension components. If one tire is hotter than the rest, then that tire is underinflated and/or the car is transferring too much weight to that corner.

It seems like a silly way to see if one tire is underinflated. Wouldn't you check the tire pressure before you ran? Sounds like its a testing tool to see if the tires are hooking up evenly.

It's all about data for making the car consistant and as fast as possible. Race teams often get tire and track temps to log with run data from the on board computer and use it to get better/faster.

Well, on a track with more hard lefts than rights, you might want your right side tires (and probably especially your front right, depending on weight distribution) pumped up a bit higher than the left. So you can't just go around and and make sure they're all the same with a pressure gauge.

The point is, if one tire is getting hotter than the rest, then it's working harder than the rest, and you need to adjust something to even it out.

Yeah we're going to have to ignore Jake on this one as he seems to be in the wrong forum with his answers.
