Personally I wouldn't touch the powerglide type gear ratios (ie a 2.73 gear'd TH400) at the weights you're dealing with. I suppose it all depends on what's most important to you with the car, but at that weight, you're putting a load on the motor, and are more likely to detonate it.

My Converter guy talked me out of a 'glide for my car due to just this reason, and I expect my car to weigh no more then 3300lbs w/ me in it. I think he knows what he's doing with this stuff....

Rich, I'm pretty sure you've heard the saying "No such thing as a Free Lunch."

Tradeoffs suck.

If you're THAT deadset on an Overdrive, the the GV is probably your best route for both sides of the coin. I know you said the pricetag sucked, but no one said this was a cheap game we play.

Good luck!

I am thinking you are right and I may have to bite the bullet and consider the GV if I go TH400. Next week I am going to be talking to G-Force. Apparently, the G-Force I tried in my buddys Mustang(the G-101 4-speed) is quite different from the GF-R 5-speed. The GF-R may be much more "streetable". Supposedly good for 1200hp in a 3,500lb car it oughta be good for 900 in a 4,000lber. The only real problems with it may be: how to get a signal to drive the speedometer and the $5,000 price tag!

i'm almost ashamed that i didn't post that before kurtis did. the only people you see running the kind of gearing you're talking about have glides in cars that weigh ~3000~ or less. with the kind of power you're making, you're almost certain to start breaking stuff sooner rather than later. now, if you'd just put your car on a new year's diet....

the guys in SS/O were using them in 3300lb cars making 1200-1400hp

with the standard PG gearing of 1.76 and 1:1 versus an aftermarket higher first gear, i dont think you'd load the motor more than it could sustain

we'll find out anyway, i have 3.08 gears and i should be making close to 800hp and i'm running a TH400. We'll see what happens

Hmm, They sound like the guys Marty was telling me kept putting holes in pistons until they switched from a Glide to a TH400.

You have a Turbo car if I remember right? My Understanding is a Turbo car will just make more and more power the more load you put on it (Please correct me if I'm wrong). Thats just a generalization, obviouslu you need more fuel, etc.

A Nitrous car will just detonate much easier. Thats all I'm looking at................

Well, if you lug any kind of motor down from too huge of a gear shift i would worry about detonation. From what i was told, you only have to worry about the loading of the motor and/or detonating if you weren't using the standard PG gearing. they make larger aftermarket planets for the PG and the huge jump in gearing is what i was told causes the problems

like instead of
1.76
1:1

you use
1.82
1:1

or even bigger i know they make
