terrible M6 launch
terrible M6 launch
I just got my 97 30th SS 2 weeks ago and took it to the track this past saturday, it was a spring warmup(test-n-tune). The car is stock with 35k miles. I searched all the threads for a "how to" launch technique. I applied what I read and I found that I still can't drive the M6 worth a darn. My 60 foot was terrible. I broke loose in 1st,2nd and 3rd. It has been raining off and on the past 2 weeks so I doubt track conditions were optimum.
R/T .259
60 2.642
330 6.582
1/8 9.900
mph 71.65
1000 12.806
1/4 15.200
mph 94.74
At about half track is where I banged 3rd, I broke traction and hit the rev limiter.
I arrived after noon at the track and it started raining so I only got 1 run in.

The tires are Bridgestone Pontenza's, they are fairly new. I had these on a 95 TA and hated them. They are rated for 60k miles.
It was a test n' tune day so the track guys were running cars back to back as fast as possible. The car in front of me was a Honda civic w/turbo with vanity plates that said v8killer. My girlfriend watched him go down the track and said he seemed to hit an invisible wall at half track and was blowing smoke like crazy. So maybe he oiled the track. Not wanting to make excuses for my inexperience but could be. Sure wish I could have gotten another run in the left lane. Which was my favorite last year in my 68.

Re: terrible M6 launch
Regardless of E.T., your MPH looks WAY low, unless you completely blew the tires off for half the track, which I would wager is impossible in a stock LT-1. Does the car seem to run well when driving it on the street? I noticed it has low miles, but it is nine years old now, so it may be time for plugs, wires, fuel filter, etc...... As far as launching goes, bring the RPM's up to about 3-3.5K and very aggressively slip the clutch when you launch. Basically dump it, but lift your foot up quickly rather than sidestepping it. I consistently cut 2.0-2.1 60' using this technique.

I was there too and that civic was in front of me at the tech inspection. My friend said he ran a 12.2 which is pretty quick for firebird. I saw some Z06's that were running barely 13.4. Of course we were racing right into the wind. Nice to see someone else from Idaho on here. Maybe we'll have to go race eachother sometime.

Hey there 1LE someone else from Idaho. Thought I talked to someone else here awhile back who is also on this site. Oh yah forgot to mention that wind. What was it about 15 mph straight on headwind? How did you get a 1LE?
I work saturdays usually, but yah we'll have to line up on the track sometime.
I don't plan on modding this car, other than skip shift eliminator. I've got a 68 in pieces in my garage that I hope to run in July. Providing it gets back together. I still need a rear diff. that will take the beating I'm going to give it.

Re: terrible M6 launch
Screaming deal! I now feel robbed(not really) paying 14900 for 34k miles on my 97. I wanted a 30th SS since I read a magazine article in late 96, so I guess it is worth what I'd pay.
Anyway following your other thread. Practice, practice, practice. I need alot being a newbie to runnin' a 4th gen down the track. I didn't do all that well with my 1st gen. Partially handicapped w/one legger and 10year old radials. But again had a tough time launching with a manual trans.
