T-56 Bellhousing protection
T-56 Bellhousing protection
What is being used on high horsepower, T-56 equipped cars for protection against clutch and transmission failures. I'm not aware of a SFI bellhousing and have not heard of anyone wrapping their trans with a blanket. I can't imagine that most "good" tracks allow a 6-speed F-body running faster than 11.49 to pass tech, without some additional safety equipment. What has anybody else run into at tech and what is able to be done about it???
After some more research, I came across a McLeod SFI bellhousing for the T-56 but their website is not very user friendly. Does anyone know if the #8710-00 bellhousing will work on the LT-1 motors and will you be able to utilize the same hydraulic clutch set-up???
I was trying to do the same thing.
According to McLeod, you need the 8710-00. You will need to swap to the LS1 style clutch and an input shaft that is 1/4" longer due to the extra thickness of the bellhousing plate.
I took an 8710-15 (which bolts to the LT1) to a machinist that does bellhousing work for other auto trans builders. It was a half-inch too deep and required major modification to use the LT1 clutch fork system. It would cost about $150 in labor to shorten it 1/2" and re-configure the bell to use the LT1 clutch system. I dropped the idea when I found out I would still need to use a 1/4" longer input shaft due to the plate thickness.
McCleod says they have no interest in going the LT1 route.
I'd love to know if someone has a blanket that we could use

I have found 2 blanket options in searches here and google. Both are listed as 'transmission blankets' but are about 4 feet long, and showed up in threads related to 'scattershield' as flywheel explosion protection. I do NOT know for sure they will fit the bell housing, or are for only the trans housing. Looks like bellhousing to me:

Haven't decided which one to use myself yet, lbut Summit probably since cheaper and steel webbed. Anybody with experience please comment as to fit on bellhousing & quality!

I found a writeup on the Corvette version at exotic muscle. Application for their model C6800 is Corvette Bell Housing, so it follows that the similar F6800 is for the F-body bellhousing, even though no description is provided for that model. From the Vette version:
EM now offers a safety blanket that is NHRA approved and carries SFI certification for racing. For owners of highly modified cars, it is a good idea to install one to insude clutch debris (shrapnel) is contained inside the bellhousing in the event of a flywheel or clutch failure. The blanket easily installs around the bell housing withouth the removal of the transmission. Eyelets are fastened to the bell housing bolts on the top side for extra protection against blanket slippage. The bottom portions buckles up nice and snug for a tailored fit. Our blankets are also available for F-Body and LS1 Corvette. Think Safety!!!
Since the Summit blanket is similar, I believe it also is for bellhousing protection.
