Question Power Steering removal???

I want to remove my power steering pump and associated bracket and basically clean up the engine compartment but would like to keep my power rack. Have any of you guys gone this route. Any positive or negative advice is needed. Thanks

Johnny

On my Firebird I tapped the factory hose fittings with pipe threads and installed a braided loop. It works fine with 4" wide front tires. I don't know how much fun manual steering would be every day with street tires though.

My Formula has the same thing done. All of the power steering junk is taken off and the lines going to the rack and pinion are crimped. It is easy to turm with the skinnies but the wide tires are a bit harder to turn.

What do you mean by crimped. You mean you basically squeezed them closed with pliers. Do you have any pics or exact details on how to do this. It would be greatly appreciated

Lucas, you would have to remove the AC to be able to get rid of the power steering. then you ditch the whole accessory bracket and tensioner and just relocate the alternator to the bottom of the motor. opens things up alot in the engine bay.

Jason is working on taking your ABS off right now. would be a good time to put a line lock on

Im going broker by the second LOL!!!! Hes a good guy to deal with and I am happy with his efforts. Im definently willing to take all that extra crap off my car (AC, power steering, big bracket, etc.) but I just dont understand exactly how to take it off. Basically I remove the power steering pump, bracket, ac compressor, and then what would I do. I appreciate all the help you have given me and if you ever need a reference from this board if you are trying to sell something I would be more than happy to put in a good word. Take it easy

you remove the ac compressor, lines, condenser, belt tensioner, power steering pump & reservior, and the accessory bracket. you replace the bracket with a bracket to mount the alternator at the bottom of the motor. i am using a bracket setup made by madman, but other people also now make brackets that are just as good or better for less money. i beleive Steve10 is one of them? maybe ill get around to taking a pic of it today to show you my setup.

you will lose quite a bit of weight off the front, but to me a big reason i removed the AC/power steering etc on mine was just to free up space to make working on the car easier

i dunno, probably 15lbs together. i could weigh them tonight if you want to know exactly. also probably gain a couple HP from not having to turn the PS pump, 1le pulley, and tensioner

Good deal. I know that when I dropped my belt on the dyno I picked up 14 rwhp..thats right 14. I made 3 pulls...made within 1 hp of each other..then droped it and picked up 14. So if I could get alittle of that at all times I would be happy. Not to mention the weight savings off the nose of the car.
