Open exhaust or not??

I was wondering if I could gain a tenth or two by having exhaust cut out (open exhaust at the track)?? I've got real good exhaust system, 2.5" True dual with BBK X-pipe and Dynomax Bullets, hooker long tubes. Is it worth it? Cutting up this nice exhaust system and putting cut outs on it (not the fancy elecrtic opening) and hurting street performance?
I hate how hard it is to have a drag car that's a TRUE street car too
It's a N/A 383 motor btw. (over 120mph in the 1/4)

Re: Open exhaust or not??

its hard to tell being that you have true duals........But I know for a fact that when I open mine up i gain a good deal of topend. Never track tested, but I did like 4 dropdowns with a 12 second gtp and he beat me until I opened up my cutout, then I edged him out with it open. But, then again I have a hooker catback which is more restrictive........but then again you are making alot more power then me, so it definately could help you. Oh and at the track having an open cutout sounds pretty badass imo .

Re: Open exhaust or not??

With both my 12 second 355 and this 10 second 388 I've run true duals through 2.5" and 3" systems through flowmaster 40 series, the 2.5" had an H pipe, this current 3" system does not. Both systems dumped at front of rear diff.

BOTH engines ran the exact same numbers at every spot on the track, which I love since I know my car could run on the street what it does on the track...no to mention i alway liked giving the spot to a uncorked gutted race car then handing him his azz at the stripe LOL!!!!

I know plenty of guys that do pick up dumping the exhuast, I think alot of it is due to losing the weight of the exhuast system itself, others cuz they use junk azzed turbomufflers or something of that nature. Only thing I know for sure, youo wont know until you try. But who cares if you have a street car that runs this at the track missing all these missing items, build and tune it so it runs what it runs whenever and whereever it's needed
