Do not over tighten them and you should replace with a good studs like the one's from ARP. It's sad to say this but wheel studs are the most over looked part on most street/strip cars.

I've never under stood the IHRA/NHRA rule requiring a car running quicker than 12.o having to have good harnes / seat belts every two years and they over look the value of replacing the wheel studs in a same manor??. You have to have the good grade studs per safty/et rules but no replacement policy???
It's very over look'd issue in my eyes.
Don't take me wrong I'm only spreading the good word and VERY< VERY > sorry to hear about your failure.

Glad to hear you're ok man, I got really lucky last summer when I went to take off my slicks my right side tire's lug nuts were hand loose. Hope this is a reallity check for everyone. Good luck with the reconstruction.

Just curious. I have been torquing to 110, which I check before and after the the first run.

I used to TRY and torque mine to 100. After a couple of broken studs and a few stripped out lug nuts I bought a new torque wrench thinking that may be the problem. It wasn't; more broken studs and stripped nuts. Installed ARP studs, bought all new lug nuts and only torque them to 80 now. Every time I rotate tires or change my wheels to my DR's I make sure I pay attention to how much effort it takes to loosen the nuts. Been doing this for about 3 years now and have never found a loose lug nut.

wow! glad to hear you are ok! that is something i will definitely look at more closely, i tighten them with impact gun prior to racing. i will now take 30 seconds to check them periodically!

g'luck in getting it back together!

Man, I am glad you are OK. That looks like a badass car, too. I hope you get everything put back together soon. I wish I had a quarter panel lying around. Try eBay, I guess.

Wow, that really sucks, hope you are okay.

I torque my wheels all the time, I go 90-95 ft lbs with my Pro Stars.

But, are you sure that is what caused that? Maybe you hit a patch of oil and the car got loose? Seems to me that if the wheel is loose it still won't drag the caliper enough to turn the car like you are describing? I have had calipers grind at high speeds and it did not do that it just ruins the wheel. In any event I hope that folks help you out on parts and you just get past this.

I agree with PSJ. If the wheel touched the brakes enough to lock up there would be worse damage to the wheel than what I saw in the picture. I think somehting else went wrong and the wheel got scraped when you hit the wall.

Good luck with getting your car fixed.

Arrow WeW!

Glad no injury but feel bad for the black bitch.

Couple more things at the start of the season to check, trailer lug nuts and tow vehicle lug nuts, right at the same time you qre doing the race car.
