is my car just slow

Just had a cam installed with some other mods. Car runs descent some times but mostly seems to be running around 14 in the quarter. What could be the problem? Was something not done right? What should my HP be at the wheels? What can I do to improve? What is everyone else running with this setup?

Mods- throttle body bypass, cai, LT pacesetters, hot cam with springs, comp cam roller tip 1.6 rockers, pcm for less tune, performance exhaust, street tires. Guy installed new timing gears, valve seals.

IMO, as much as people say PCM for less makes good tunes. I think once you get a cam, it's time to get a professional tune.

Re: is my car just slow

My LT1 was consistently running mid 13s at 100-101 with just 1 5/8 shortie headers, cold air, a short throw shifter and drag radials.

What are your average 60' times and MPH?

A wild guess would be the valves are not properly adjusted as I saw a similar issue a couple of times before... Everything would seem to run properly, the car was "decent", but it had no real power. When someone familiar with the LT1 correctly set the valves the difference was incredible.

Makes me wonder. Cause it seemed as if it may have actually been a little more torquey with the stock tune. Just wouldn't idle after it warmed up. Maybe I just had to high of expectations for a 12 second car

Not sure what my numbers are. I'm thinking 3 seconds on 60 ft. I haven't actually had it to
The track. I had an ls1 ram air that ran consistent 13.5s with just some Bolt ons. This car doesn't feel close to the way it did. Plus I raced same car with this lt1 that I raced with the ls1. He just pulls off and leaves this one. Should I be running 12's

You should go to the track and actually get a baseline. Dyno numbers only tell so much and I suspect the butt-o-meter is not experienced and practiced enough to truly make an accurate assessment. Go to the track and post up the timeslips and the guys here can help to isolate any problem areas. Plus, a night at the track is always fun regardless of how well the car performs (or not).

Sounds as if I have more than 1 lifter or rocker making noise on each side of motor. Should I be able to hear them rattling like that? I am going to try and get to the track by the weekend after next

If you are hearing a sound from the engine bay that you are pretty certain "is not right", have it checked by a competent mechanic first. You do not want to aggravate a little problem into a larger one.

Re: is my car just slow

not sure if it is a bad sound or not. definitely hear some valve or lifter clatter on both sides though. not outrageous though. really feels weak though. like it might only be running 14's. could it be my tune. or do you think it is something with the cam installation. I need something to go on if i am going to call warranty on his work. oil pressure sucks to. warm temperature is 8-10 at idle and wot is only like 18. wont go past 20 psi at all. going by the gauge anyway. had close to 60 before the cam

I would not drive it until I knew I had oil pressure, (check the oil sending unit), rule of thumb is 10 psi per 1000 rpm. If what your saying is correct about the oil pressure (no more than 20 psi), you have a mechanical problem.

Low oil pressure is a very bad thing. I would not drive it until the problem is resolved.

Re: is my car just slow

ok. oil pressure problem was sending unit. fixed . holding 40 psi at cruise. ran two passes back to back on my new gtech competition unit. stats were as i suspected.

run 1-13.92 quarter mile. 102.7 mph. 60 ft. was 2.273. 330 ft. was 6.028. 1/8 mile was 9.085@82.20. 0-60 was 5.447 seconds.

run2-14.23@98.49mph quarter mile. 60 ft. was 2.284. 330 ft. was 6.088. 1/8 mile was 9.219@80.26mph. 0-60 was 5.641 seconds. respectable? yes. as good as it gets? i hope not . also my rear gear is 373. forgot to mention that in mods i think. my dad and bolton mechanic both think that its times have to do with the valve lashing.

Those numberz seem a little off to me. With hot cam 1.6 rockers and 3.73 gears. You should easy be in mid 13s if not quicker.

Re: is my car just slow

That's what I thought. My Bolton mechanic unhooked the knock sensor so it wouldn't be retarding the timing. He said he would re lash my valves next week. Not sure if that is the problem or not though. The car will barely spin tires at wide open throttle out of the hole.
