I have to drive 100 miles round trip to the drags. Is there a sticky tire that can survive the trip and give me 1.6 60' times?
My car is a 79 Camaro w/383 3200 stall, 3.73:1, approx 380 hp n/a and 480 with nos.
Or am I doomed to carry a tire in the back seat and 1 in the trunk?

Get friendly with your back seat. Even if the tires would "take it", they would wear out extremely fast, probably you would have a lot of flats, be very subject to punctures, roll off the rims in the corners, and the heat from driving would bring all the oils to the surface and they wouldn't hook worth crap.
I ran BFG drag radials for 1 1/2 years and drove to and from the track on them. They are a very different tire than a slick or an ET Street.
They do hook ok, but on a questionable track you will have problems. They don't have the sidewall flex of a slick but they are a soft rubber compound so on a decent track, in the groove, they will take some abuse.
I bracket race so any inconsistency is bad as far as I am concerned. If you are basically grudge racing they may work fine for you. They do wear out fairly quickly although the Nitto's have twice the tread of the BFG's so you may want to start with them if you plaqn on being on the road a lot.
I cannot imagine them hooking with a shot of juice although I'm sure someone here has done it. You have enough horsepower to be on the outside edge of what drag radials can handle in my opinion. Maybe you can borrow a pair and try them before you plunk down your cash. They are a far cry from slicks.
