launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
ok well i cant seem to pull even close to a 2.0 60'. ill be going to the track in a few weeks and dont wanna be disappointed before i throw my winter wheels and tires on for the upcoming season.
the car runs consistent 14.2s at 101 with 2.4 60'.lol. ive ran it 4 times the last time i went out of about 8 total runs. its so consistent but i cant get those nittos to hook. they either bogged the car cause of too low a clutch dump or spun.
now heres my mistakes for sure...
no burnout...
30 psi...
constant clutch drop...
ok, what do you guys think of dumping over feathering/slipping. i have stock 10 bolt with 3.42s, 6 speed with a hurst shifter, and 315-35-17 nittos.
also about what PSI should i start with em. im thinking around 18 or so and just cleaning them off a bit with a small spin before launching. any oppinions or helpful hints to pull a sub 2.0 60'. please dont say suspension, i know guys are cutting 1.7s with all stock suspensions and DRs. thanks for any help. im needin it.lol

Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
Nittos do need more heat than slicks. Start with a little over 20 psi and go down from there 2 psi at a time. Slip out the clutch until the tires are just spinning and then feather it to get traction. Some slippage is good as long as you're moving forward and not just sitting there. Don't try to compare your 60' times with those of automatics. They will almost always have better times. Even with most bolt-ons, my best 60' was 1.9, but I'm not a very experienced driver.
Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
Heat them till they just start to smoke. 18-20 psi would be a good starting point. (My 16" Nittos used to like 16-17)
As for launch, what RPM are you leaving at now?
Try letting it out quick but not dumping it, start at around 3500-4000 launches and adjust as needed.
Good luck, even with just that you should easily be mid to high 13's.

Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
I would start more around 2700-3k rpm and go from there. Keep the RPM constant and drop the tire psi if you're spinning. If you're bogging, keep the psi constant and raise the rpm a little.
Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
really.... well hell, i never did a burnout at all with them.
so you guys would suggest slipping the clutch a tad? im gonna stage really early so i have room to roll and give it a lot more RPMs then last time like said. i was dumping the clutch every single time from around 2,500 to 3,000.
also didnt know nittos liked heat and burnouts. interesting. thanks a ton guys, this stuff is helping me get better ideas. any other oppinions?

Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
In order to have the Nitto DR's to work, it is a MUST to do a burn out. For best results, I would have the tires spinning for a minumum of 5 seconds. One quick skirch will do pretty much nothing, they need to be hot sticky and soft, and the only way to do that is to drop the tire pressure to around 20psi or so, and heat them up by doing a good burnout.
Once you have accomplished the burnout, you need to get a good launch down. With your current setup, honestly you should be able to acheive mid 13's. All most all of your quarter mile time will be determined by the launch. After that, most anyone can shift fast and drive the same down the strip, its all in the launch that counts. You need to find the RPM point in between spinning and bogging. It may be a small point, but I assure you it is there. The best way to find it is to find a road out in BFE where no one is around and heat the tires up, and practice your launch to find the point. You may have to let the clutch out slow at first to get it moving, and then as soon as the car moves slip your foot off of the clutch. I am betting though since you are pretty much a bolt on car, that you should be able to find an RPM at which you can just dump the clutch at all together with the tires heated and it will hook perfectly. The RPM should be somewhere between 2700-3500.
When my 95 was all bolt ons with Nitto DR's, I was able to catch a 2.0 60' time, and a quarter mile of 13.3, my setup was similar to yours. It's when you get more power than the bolt ons give you that make for a more difficult launch with DR's.

Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
Yea I have Nittos as well and can cut 2.0-2.1's all day long but I can never get it down to 1.9x. My best pass was 13.48 @103 on a 2.03 60ft. Thats with Hooker catback, CAI, MadZ28 Tune, and the nittos. Mine always seems to bog when I launch it even at 3500rpms. I am afraid to launch higher cuz I don't want to break the rear.
Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
i run my BFG radials at like 13-15psi and smoke em' fairly good...then slip the clutch a bit from 2K off the launch..they dont spin at all..my 13.4@104 run 1.9 60' was in 90 degree weather..with this cool fall weather, im hopin like 13.2ish
Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
buzz12586, I wouldn't worry about the rear end. It will get most of it's abuse from bogging. Spinning will actually not be as hard on the rear. Even then, running every bolt on made on an LT1 with drag radials, your rear end should hold up just fine. If you slapped some slicks on it, then it might possibly go on you. In reality it would probably hold until slicks and more power than the bolt ons could give you. Let em rip, you'll be fine.
bow94z, there is an ideal temperature out there. The hotter it is, the better your tires stick, and worse your car performs. The colder it is, the less the tires hook up, and the better the car performs. Ideally if you roast your tires and get them nice and sticky, I would bet about 50-55 degress would be ideal. Good luck.

Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
Trust me, there will be an RPM if you keep launching higher at which it will spin. Ideally you want to find that RPM and then launch it at just below the spinning point. That will get your your best luanch, and if everything else goes well the rest of the 1/4 mile, then it will be your best time as well.
Re: launchin m6 lt1 with nittos, oppinions
I have been using a 5 year old set of nitto's at 26 psi and doing a good burnout(dump the clutch and then power brake) than release the brake and spin to just before the beam's. DO NOT go through the water box with street tire's! Then I have been dumping the clutch at about 3k and the tire's wont spin, slight bog but 1.84 60ft. The best improvement you can make is a set of lca relocation bracket's for less then $100 and less time than to change to your winter wheel's it is like having traction bar's. I have run a best of 12.82 at 109mph with room to improve if I drive it better. If you don't want to do any chassis work start with a good burnout and take it from there. Practice the burnout in a parking lot or a deserted road but don't expect it to hook on the street like it will at the track.GOOD LUCK
