icing intake?
Has anyone iced down their intake manifold with good results? I know cooler dense air will produce more power. I think there's a formula where for every 10 degrees drop in ambient temps can result in 5-10 hp? Anyone know?
Post your results if you've iced down at the track. Oh, I already know racers don't like it when your dripping water at the line from icing so be careful.
Thanks

I run alcohol. My intake is always cold.
The only way icing an intake will help you is if you are pushed through staging and only fire the car up as you're called to go at the head of staging.
The only reason you'd want to ice your intake is in a heads up race where you need all the hp you can get. If you're in a bracket race, icing the intake isn't required since speed means nothing in a bracket race.

Icing?
Very briefly, yes, thoroughly icing the intake manifold or plenum area for half an hour or so before running can be expected to improve performance. Keeping the coolant temperature as low as possible will also drop the ET. For validation of this theory, stroll through the staging lanes at an NHRA event during Stock or Super Stock class runoffs and observe the number of ice bags in use. The same racers will not use the icing technique during the handicapped portion of the program since consistency, not performance, is the key to success in handicap racing.
I have experienced ET improvements in the range of .15 or more directly attributed to a cool intake, flushing cold water through the radiator and pulling into the water box with a temperature reading of 110 to 115 degrees.

cnorton, you're correct regarding Stockers using ice in lanes, etc. Likely many of you notice the starters using a mop after most of them launch, it's certainly not to swab on more traction compound, lol. There's a number of other little tricks used in qual runs, mostly dependent on where you're at on the shts and who you may draw first round as a result. Unless you're the the big dog in your class you def don't want to draw a heads up run for first rd.
